When I bought my first insurance plan (car, in my case), I honestly had no clue what to even ask. Ended up nodding along while the agent rattled off terms like "deductible" and "comprehensive"—I just wanted to know if I'd be covered if someone dinged my door at the grocery store. Looking back, I probably should've asked more about what exactly was included and how claims actually work. Anyone else feel totally lost their first time? What did you wish you'd asked?

Honestly, I was in the same boat—just wanted to get it over with and didn’t even think to ask about rental coverage or what happens if someone hits me and takes off. Looking back, I wish I’d grilled them on how claims actually play out. The deductible thing tripped me up too... turns out, picking a super low one isn’t always the best move if you want to keep your premiums reasonable. Insurance jargon is a maze, but it’s worth digging into the details before signing anything.

Yeah, the deductible thing tripped me up too. When my rates jumped after a couple tickets, I started looking closer at all the fine print—turns out, some companies sneak in weird exclusions or super high deductibles for certain claims. I also learned the hard way that “uninsured motorist” coverage isn’t always included by default, which feels wild considering how many hit-and-runs happen. The rental car coverage is another one that’s easy to overlook until you actually need it... and then you’re stuck scrambling. It’s a lot to keep track of, but digging into those details really does save headaches down the line.

Honestly, I got burned on the rental car thing too. I figured my regular policy would just cover it, but nope—turns out you need that little box checked (and to actually read what it covers). Ended up paying out of pocket for a bumper scratch on a rental, which was not cheap.

The uninsured motorist bit is wild, yeah. You’d think it’d be standard since there’s so many folks driving around without proper insurance, but apparently not. I used to assume the “full coverage” label meant everything was handled, but there’s always some random exclusion or loophole hiding in the paperwork. It’s kind of a racket, if you ask me.

Now I double-check every renewal, even if it’s a pain. Not that I trust any of these companies 100%, but at least I feel a little less likely to get blindsided by some weird clause or sky-high deductible next time.

Reading these replies, I’m realizing how many little details I missed too. When I first signed up, I didn’t even think to ask about things like rental reimbursement or roadside assistance—just figured “insurance is insurance.” Turns out, the fine print really matters. I got stuck paying for a tow once because my policy didn’t cover it. Now, before renewing, I actually make a checklist and compare what’s included versus what I actually need. It’s tedious, but better than surprises later.
