What to do when the other driver has no insurance

Couldn’t agree more about the importance of getting that police report, even if it feels like a pain. I’ve had a minor accident where the other driver seemed cooperative at first, but later tried to deny everything. Having the report saved me a ton of headaches with my insurance. It’s just not worth risking it, especially if you suspect they might not be insured.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt (and the dented bumper). I always tell folks: step one, breathe. Step two, call the cops—even if the other driver’s all smiles and “let’s just handle this ourselves.” Trust me, that can go sideways fast. Ever had someone try to swap info and then vanish into thin air? What’s everyone’s take on uninsured motorist coverage—worth it or just another line on the bill?

Uninsured motorist coverage has saved me more than once, honestly. When you’re driving something that costs more than some folks’ houses, you don’t want to gamble on someone else’s responsibility. I get that it feels like just another add-on, but the peace of mind is worth it—especially when repairs aren’t cheap. Has anyone actually had their insurer push back on a UM claim? Curious if that’s as common as people say or just internet horror stories...

I get where you’re coming from about the peace of mind, but I gotta admit, I’ve always been a little skeptical about just how much UM coverage is really worth for most people. I mean, if your car’s super high-end or rare, sure, it makes sense—repairs are brutal. But for folks driving something more average, isn’t there a point where the extra premium just doesn’t add up?

I’ve never actually had an insurer push back on a UM claim myself, but I’ve heard stories from friends about delays and nitpicking over details. Not outright denials, just a lot of hoops to jump through. Maybe it depends on the company? Or maybe people only post when things go sideways, so it seems worse online than in real life.

Curious if anyone’s ever regretted paying for UM coverage after years of never needing it. Sometimes I wonder if it’s just one of those “better safe than sorry” things that insurance companies love to sell us...

I hear you on the “better safe than sorry” angle—it does feel like insurance companies are always happy to push that line, right? Honestly, I’ve gone back and forth about UM coverage a few times. My van’s nothing fancy, but I keep thinking about medical bills if someone hits me and can’t pay up. The premiums aren’t huge, but after years of not using it, I do wonder if it’s just money out the window. On the other hand, I’d probably kick myself if I dropped it and then needed it... Murphy’s Law and all that.
