Choosing between basic liability and full coverage for your first car—what did you go with?

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from. I used to think liability was enough too, but after a couple tickets and a minor accident (my fault), my rates shot up and I started worrying more about getting into it with someone who’s uninsured. I still don’t spring for full coverage since my car’s not worth much, but I do see the value in paying a bit extra for that uninsured motorist add-on. Feels like a necessary evil if you’re not the luckiest driver...

Totally get that—it’s wild how fast rates can jump after just one mistake. I had a similar run-in a few years back, and suddenly liability didn’t feel like enough, even though my car was barely worth the price of a new set of tires. Uninsured motorist coverage is one of those things you hope you never need, but man, when you do, you’re glad it’s there. Sometimes it feels like insurance is just paying for peace of mind, but honestly, that’s worth something too.

I hear you on the peace of mind thing. I used to think liability was enough too, but after a close call with a hit-and-run (literally just missed my bumper), I started rethinking it. My commute’s long and there’s always someone not paying attention or driving uninsured. Paying a bit more for extra coverage stings, but honestly, I sleep better knowing I’m not totally screwed if something goes sideways. It’s not just about the car’s value for me—it’s the hassle and stress if something happens.

Full coverage all the way for me, but I get where you’re coming from. That “paying a bit more for extra coverage stings, but honestly, I sleep better” line really hits home.

Paying a bit more for extra coverage stings, but honestly, I sleep better knowing I’m not totally screwed if something goes sideways.

Here’s how I thought about it, step by step (because that’s just how my brain works):

1. First, I looked at what my car was actually worth. Not a brand new ride, but still enough that I’d be ticked if it got totaled and I had to cough up the cash for a replacement.
2. Next, I factored in my “luck.” Let’s just say, if there’s a pothole or a distracted driver within a mile radius, somehow I find them. Murphy’s Law is basically my co-pilot.
3. Then there’s the family angle. With kids in the backseat, the idea of being stranded or dealing with a drawn-out insurance mess is just... nope. Not worth the stress.
4. I compared quotes for liability vs. full coverage. The price jump wasn’t nothing, but it wasn’t wallet-destroying either.

Honestly, the hassle of dealing with repairs, rental cars, or chasing down someone else’s insurance after an accident? That’s what tipped me over. Even if my car isn’t worth a ton, my time and sanity are. Plus, there’s always that one uninsured driver out there who thinks stop signs are optional.

I know some folks say liability is fine if your car isn’t worth much, and maybe that makes sense if you’re young and don’t mind rolling the dice. But for me, with a couple of car seats in the back and a tendency to attract weird driving situations, it’s just not worth the risk.

Funny enough, my partner thought I was being overly cautious at first—until we had a fender bender in a grocery store parking lot (of course no note left). Full coverage made it a non-event instead of a headache.

Long story short: extra peace of mind is worth more than my monthly coffee habit. And trust me, I drink a lot of coffee...

Couldn’t agree more with this:

Even if my car isn’t worth a ton, my time and sanity are.
I see people try to save a few bucks with liability, but then one random accident and they’re out way more. Full coverage just takes so much stress off your plate, especially with kids.
