Choosing between basic liability and full coverage for your first car—what did you go with?

I totally get that “car as lifeline” feeling. I remember my first winter working claims—my own car was parked under a sketchy tree, and every time the wind picked up, I’d wonder if I should just wrap it in bubble wrap. I’ve seen both sides: folks who wish they’d paid for full coverage after a random hailstorm, and others paying way more than their car’s worth. Honestly, I think it comes down to what keeps you sleeping at night. For me, once my car hit that “not worth much” stage, I dropped down to liability and just crossed my fingers... but I still flinch when I hear thunder.

That “should I bubble wrap my car?” feeling is too real. I kept full coverage on my first car way longer than most people would, just because I couldn’t stomach the idea of a tree branch or hail wiping it out. Once it got older, though, I did the math and realized I was paying more in premiums than the car was worth. Still, every time a storm rolls in, I wonder if I made the right call... but at some point, you just have to trust your luck and hope for clear skies.

I totally get that urge to wrap your car in bubble wrap—my first “real” car was a ‘92 Accord, and I babied it like crazy. I kept full coverage for years, even though my friends said I was wasting money. But after a minor fender bender and a hailstorm in the same year, the insurance actually paid out more than I’d put in. Once it hit 200k miles, though, I finally switched to liability. It’s always a gamble, but sometimes you just have to trust your gut... and maybe park under a tree when the forecast looks sketchy.

Funny you mention the tree—my old Mustang got a nice dent from an acorn, so even that’s not foolproof. I get what you mean about full coverage, though. Did you ever feel like you were just paying for peace of mind more than anything? For me, once a car hits a certain age, I start questioning if it’s worth shelling out for more than liability. Ever regret not switching sooner, or did those payouts really make it worth it?

Honestly, once my Civic hit about 10 years old, I dropped full coverage and just kept liability. The premiums were creeping up, but the payout wouldn’t have been much if anything happened. For me, it felt like paying for peace of mind that didn’t really match the car’s value anymore. If you’re not financing and can handle a loss, liability’s usually enough—unless you’re super unlucky with falling acorns, I guess.
