Title: Choosing between basic liability and full coverage for your first car—what did you go with?

I get what you mean—those “what if” moments love to pop up at 2am, right? Honestly, I’ve seen people save a ton with liability, but then there’s always that one friend who gets hit by a runaway shopping cart. It’s like rolling dice with your wallet. I usually tell folks, if you’d cry over a busted windshield or a mystery dent, maybe full coverage is worth the extra coffee money per month. But hey, if you’re driving an old beater and can laugh off a scratch or two... liability might be all you need.

Yeah, those late-night “what if” scenarios are the worst. I totally get the logic behind just sticking with liability, especially if your car isn’t worth much. But here’s something I keep wondering—does anyone actually factor in how much they drive or where they park? Like, if you’re street parking in a busy city, isn’t the risk of random damage way higher? I had a friend who went with liability only, then got sideswiped while parked and ended up paying out of pocket for repairs. Made me rethink things.

Also, does anyone else feel like insurance companies make it intentionally confusing to compare what you’re really getting? Sometimes I wonder if the peace of mind from full coverage is worth more than just the dollar amount. Or maybe that’s just me overthinking it...

Yeah, that’s a huge factor. I used to park on the street near my apartment and my car got dinged twice in a year—nobody ever left a note. Liability didn’t help at all. Honestly, insurance companies thrive on making this stuff confusing, and I agree, sometimes the “peace of mind” is just as valuable as the coverage itself. You’re not overthinking it—if anything, most people don’t think about it enough.

Couldn’t agree more. I learned the hard way after a rogue shopping cart left a lovely dent in my BMW—full coverage saved me big time. Street parking’s basically a contact sport in some neighborhoods. If you value your sanity (and your paint job), full coverage isn’t overkill. You’re thinking ahead, not overthinking.

That’s been my experience too, but I’ll admit—I used to think full coverage was for “paranoid” drivers. Then a tree branch took out my side mirror during a storm. If I’d only had liability, I’d have been out a few hundred bucks, easy. I do sometimes wonder if I’m paying for more than I need, but yeah, the stress reduction is worth it. Funny how your perspective shifts after a close call or two...
