Totally agree—

“if paying the deductible would wipe out your emergency fund, it’s probably too high.”
That’s the key for me. I drive a lot for work, so even small repairs pop up more often than I’d like. I’d rather pay a bit more monthly and not stress if something happens. Peace of mind is worth it.

I get where you’re coming from—peace of mind is huge, especially if you’re on the road a lot. For me, I always weigh the monthly premium against what I’ve actually got set aside for emergencies. If the deductible is more than I could comfortably pay out of pocket, it’s just not worth the risk. But sometimes I wonder if I’m being too cautious and leaving money on the table by not raising my deductible a bit. Has anyone ever regretted going with a lower deductible? Or maybe found that the savings from a higher one really added up over time? Just curious how others balance that trade-off.

I hear you. I bumped my deductible up once thinking I’d pocket the difference each month. A year later, a deer totaled my front end and that “savings” disappeared in one go. Still not sure if the gamble ever really pays off unless you’re super lucky... or just never file a claim.

Man, I feel this. I once upped my deductible thinking I’d just avoid accidents... then a rogue shopping cart had other plans. Sometimes it’s like the universe knows when you’re trying to save a buck.

I get the logic behind raising the deductible to save on premiums, but honestly, I’d rather pay a little more each month and not have a mini heart attack every time I park next to a rusty minivan. Maybe it’s just me, but my luck is basically Murphy’s Law in action—if I try to “game” the system, something always finds a way to mess it up.

I know people say you should only raise your deductible if you’ve got the savings to cover it, but who actually has a “deer fund” or a “rogue cart stash” sitting around? I’d rather have peace of mind and a slightly emptier wallet than risk a surprise bill that wipes out my ramen budget for the semester. Sometimes playing it safe just feels... safer.
