I hear you on the “hard braking” thing—sometimes I swear those apps think we’re all driving on glass roads with zero potholes or squirrels. The scoring isn’t totally a black box, but yeah, it’s not always crystal clear either. Usually, a couple of random events like dodging a pothole won’t tank your score, but if you’re slamming the brakes every other block, that’s when it starts to matter. Honestly, I wish they’d give us a “pothole pass” once in a while...

I’ve always wondered if those apps would survive a week on my commute. Between the potholes and the odd raccoon sprinting across the road, “hard braking” is just called “staying alive” around here. One time I got dinged for swerving to avoid a mattress in the middle of the lane—like, what was I supposed to do? Just plow through? I get that they want safe drivers, but sometimes it feels like they’re grading us on a fantasy track, not real roads with actual chaos.

Honestly, I’ve had the same thought about those apps. My route’s like a real-life obstacle course—last week it was a rogue trash can, next week who knows. I get wanting to reward safe driving, but it feels like they expect us to drive in a bubble. Has anyone actually seen their score go up after dodging something unavoidable, or does it always count against you?

That’s exactly what bugs me about these tracking apps. I drive a coupe that sits pretty low, so I’m always weaving around potholes and random stuff in the road. The app I tried last year dinged me for “hard steering” every time I avoided debris—which is just ridiculous. I get that they want to measure risk, but real-world driving isn’t a closed course.

I’ve noticed the scoring seems to ignore context. Like, it doesn’t care if you had to swerve because a delivery van suddenly stopped or if you’re just being reckless. Has anyone found an app that actually accounts for this? Or are they all just looking at the raw data and flagging anything out of the ordinary?

Honestly, it makes me wonder how much these scores really reflect safe driving versus just predictable driving. Maybe there’s some secret sauce to getting your score up, but dodging a rogue trash can shouldn’t count against you...

I’ve run into the same thing, and it drives me nuts. I get flagged for “aggressive braking” when a kid darts out between parked cars—like, what am I supposed to do, not stop? These apps seem obsessed with smoothness over actual safety. I’d love to see one that factors in traffic or weather, but so far, they all just crunch the numbers and call it a day. It’s frustrating because real-world driving is messy, and these scores don’t always tell the whole story.
