I get what you mean about feeling like you need some kind of “in” just to get decent service. I’ve had a couple of agents over the years who acted like I was bothering them just by asking basic questions—like, isn’t that literally their job? I don’t have anything fancy in my garage, just a couple of family haulers, but even then, it’s been hit or miss. One company (won’t name names) dragged their feet for weeks on a windshield claim, and that was enough for me to switch. Life’s too short to chase people down for stuff you’re paying for.

I do think there’s something to be said for finding an agent who actually lives in your community and has some skin in the game. The big national brands are fine until you need something out of the ordinary, then suddenly it’s all call centers and “let me transfer you.” Local agents seem to care more, or at least they know your name when you call. But yeah, I’ve noticed even some local folks are totally lost when it comes to anything outside the standard sedan or pickup coverage. My neighbor has a classic Bronco and he basically had to educate his agent on agreed value policies.

Honestly, I’m not convinced any one company is consistently better than the rest—it really does come down to the individual agent. But here’s something I’ve wondered: has anyone tried those newer online-only insurance companies? The ones that promise everything is digital and “hassle-free”? I’m skeptical they’d understand Wyoming-specific stuff (hail storms, deer collisions, etc.), but maybe I’m just old school.

Curious if anyone’s had luck with those or if it’s still safer to stick with someone local who knows the area and actually picks up the phone.

I tried one of those “all digital” insurance apps last year after my third deer run-in (don’t ask). The app was slick, but when I called about my rates going up, the rep sounded like they’d never heard of a pronghorn. Anyone else notice online companies just don’t get rural life? Or am I just cursed with bad luck and bad roads?

Wait, they’d never heard of a pronghorn? That’s wild. I feel like these digital companies are designed for folks dodging potholes downtown, not wildlife at 60 mph on county roads. Did you ever get them to lower your rate, or did they just read off a script? I keep wondering if it’s just the “algorithm” punishing us for living where the animals outnumber people... or is it really that unusual to have three deer run-ins out here?

- Totally get what you mean—those big-city algorithms just don’t “get” Wyoming roads.
- Most companies do use scripts, but some local agents will actually listen and try to work with you.
- Three deer run-ins isn’t even that weird out here, honestly. I’ve seen folks have two in a month...
- It’s not just you—the rates go up because the risk is real, but it’s frustrating when they treat it like an anomaly.
- Sometimes, if you push a bit and mention other quotes, they’ll budge on price or at least explain the why behind it.

Honestly, I haven’t had much luck with local agents being that different. They’ll listen, sure, but at the end of the day, they’re still plugging my info into the same system as everyone else. Maybe they explain things better, but the price is usually set. I’ve tried the “mention other quotes” thing too—sometimes it works, but sometimes they just shrug and say their hands are tied. Not saying don’t try, but I wouldn’t expect miracles.
