Cutting my car insurance bill in half—didn’t think it was possible here

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’ve tried the “raise your deductible” thing and it barely made a dent for me. Maybe it’s because of my driving record (not proud of it), but my comp/collision premiums are still sky-high.

If the premiums add up to more than the car’s worth in a couple years, I’ll probably switch to liability only.

That’s exactly what pushed me over the edge. My car isn’t worth much, and after a fender bender last year, my rates shot up. At some point, paying for full coverage just felt like throwing money away. Peace of mind is nice, but not when it’s draining my wallet every month.

Yeah, I totally get that feeling. I used to hang onto full coverage just for the “what if” scenarios, but after my old Civic got rear-ended (not even my fault), the payout barely covered anything and my rates still went up. At some point, it just didn’t make sense anymore. I do worry about the “what ifs,” but honestly, with an older car, liability seems like the only thing that’s not highway robbery. Anyone else ever regret dropping comp/collision, though? Sometimes I wonder if I’m tempting fate...

Honestly, I’ve been in the same boat. My old Outback’s worth maybe a couple grand on a good day, so paying for comp/collision just felt like tossing money out the window. I do get a little nervous when I park in sketchy spots or hit the highway for a long trip, but the peace of mind from not getting gouged every month is worth it. Had a minor fender bender last year—ended up fixing it myself for less than my old deductible. Sometimes you just gotta roll with it, I guess.

I totally get where you’re coming from. My daily driver used to be a 20-year-old Camry, and dropping comp/collision was like giving myself a tiny raise. Now I’ve got a newer BMW (midlife crisis, don’t judge), and let me tell you, the insurance is basically a second car payment. I’d love to ditch some coverage, but my car’s worth more than my college degree at this point—plus, one errant shopping cart and I’m out thousands.

But honestly, if your ride’s not worth much, paying for extra coverage just feels like lighting cash on fire. The only time I’d say it’s worth it is if you’re super unlucky or live somewhere cars go missing every weekend. Otherwise, fixing the little stuff yourself makes way more sense. I do miss those days of not caring about every tiny scratch... kind of liberating.

Still, every time I see my premium statement, I wonder if I should just go back to something old and scrappy. Less stress, less money down the drain.

Man, I feel this. People always ask why insurance is so expensive on anything remotely fun to drive, and I just tell them, “Because you care about it.” The universe knows when you’ve got a car you actually like, and that’s when the hailstorm or rogue shopping cart shows up.

Honestly, dropping comp/collision on my old Civic was the best financial decision I ever made—until I had to duct tape the bumper back on after a parking lot incident. But hey, that’s character, right? Now with something newer, I’m basically paying for peace of mind... and maybe a little less heartburn when I park at the grocery store.

I get tempted to go back to a beater sometimes. Insurance is cheap, and every scratch just adds to the “vintage” look. But then again, there’s something nice about not having to pray every time you turn the key. It’s a trade-off—wallet pain vs. stress pain. Pick your poison, I guess.
