I get where you’re coming from with the privacy concerns—having a dongle in the car tracking every trip isn’t for everyone. I tried one of these plans last year, mostly out of curiosity, and honestly, the device didn’t seem to drain my battery, but I drive a regular hybrid, not a full EV. The data was accurate, but I did notice some hiccups when I took the car in for service; it logged a bunch of “trips” just from being moved around the lot. Reporting mileage manually might be less precise, but it’s definitely less hassle if you’re not driving much.

That’s interesting about the service trips—never would’ve thought the dongle would pick up those extra “trips.” I’m curious, did your insurance company let you edit or remove those, or did it just count toward your total mileage? I’m leaning toward a pay-per-mile plan myself, but I’m not sure how forgiving they are with stuff like that. Also, for anyone who’s tried both, is the manual reporting process a pain, or does it actually save time compared to dealing with the tech?

That’s exactly the kind of thing that makes me nervous about these dongles. I had a rental once and the tracker counted every little move as a separate trip, which totally messed up my stats. Never tried manual reporting, but I wonder if it’s any less hassle—do they actually trust your numbers, or is there still some kind of audit? Curious if anyone’s ever gotten pushback from their insurer about “unusual” mileage patterns.

- Had the same thing happen when I took my car for an oil change—suddenly it looked like I’d done a cross-country road trip just circling the service bay.
- Manual reporting sounds chill until you realize they might want photos of your odometer every month. Not exactly “set it and forget it.”
- My insurer flagged me once for “inconsistent” mileage. Turns out, backing in and out of my garage to find my sunglasses apparently counts as a commute...
- Honestly, feels like these trackers are more paranoid than my mom when I borrow her car.

Mileage tracking can definitely get weirdly nitpicky. I had a client once who got flagged for “excessive” mileage in a single day—turns out, it was just a double trip to the airport and back because their flight got canceled. Some companies are better than others about smoothing out those blips. Metromile’s app, for example, lets you dispute odd spikes, but it’s still not perfect. Manual reporting sounds easier until you’re chasing down odometer pics every month... honestly, there’s no true “set it and forget it” option yet.
