I totally get the hassle—my app once logged a random 40-mile “trip” while my car was parked at work all day. Still not sure what triggered it. Has anyone found a tracker that actually gets it right most of the time, or is it just wishful thinking?
Had something similar happen with Metromile—my car sat in the garage, but the app thought I took a joyride across town. I tried resetting the dongle, but it still glitched now and then. Honestly, I haven’t found one that’s 100% reliable. Maybe it’s just the tech isn’t quite there yet?
That’s wild, I didn’t realize these things could just make up trips like that. I’ve been thinking about trying Root, but now I’m wondering if they’re any better with tracking. Has anyone had random miles added with other companies, or is this mostly a Metromile thing?

I’ve actually been using Root for a few months now, and so far I haven’t noticed any weird trips showing up. Their app does glitch sometimes, but it’s mostly just slow loading, not adding miles. Metromile sounds kinda stressful if it’s randomly tacking on miles you didn’t drive. Has anyone tried Milewise from Allstate? Curious if their tracking is any more reliable or if this is just a risk with all these pay-per-mile setups.
Mileage-based car insurance: who’s using it and which company do you like?
Root’s app does seem a bit slow sometimes, but honestly, I’d take that over my car getting “phantom miles” like some folks report with Metromile. I tried Milewise for a brief stint last year—figured it couldn’t hurt to see if I could save a few bucks for coffee (or, more realistically, another tire for my S-class). The tracking was... fine? Not perfect, but it didn’t randomly invent trips. That said, the dongle thing was a little too eager. I’d get notifications if I just turned the ignition on to move the car a few feet in the driveway. Maybe it’s just these systems in general—they’re not built for people who treat their car like a delicate museum piece.
I will say, none of them have figured out how to handle valet parking or those times you’re stuck in a car wash for ten minutes. My insurance thinks I’m drag racing in neutral. At this point, I’m just crossing my fingers tech will catch up before I get another “congrats on your 0.3 mile journey” email...
