Why does insurance cost more in Houston than Austin or Dallas?

Yeah, it’s true—Houston’s got more claims for just about everything. I see way more flood and theft cases here than in Dallas or Austin. People don’t realize how much that stuff adds up until the rates jump. Can’t blame the underwriters for being picky... they’re just trying to keep their heads above water.

I’ve noticed the same thing since moving here. My insurance agent warned me about Houston’s higher rates, but I didn’t really get it until my neighbor’s car got broken into twice in one year. Flooding’s another story—my street’s been underwater more than once, and that’s just normal here. I get why the rates are higher, but it does sting a bit when you’re a careful driver and still end up paying more. Guess it’s just part of living in a city with so much going on.

Yeah, Houston’s insurance rates are wild compared to other cities. I used to think it was just the traffic, but there’s a whole checklist: flooding, car break-ins, and even more uninsured drivers than you’d expect. My commute takes me through a couple of those notorious flood zones—one bad rain and suddenly everyone’s filing claims. It’s frustrating paying extra when you’re careful, but I guess the risk pool here is just bigger (and wetter).

That “wetter” part really hits home—my neighbor’s car floated halfway down the street last summer. But I always wonder, does Houston actually have more uninsured drivers than Dallas? Or is it just that the claims are bigger when stuff goes wrong? I’ve also noticed that even parking in the “safe” parts of town doesn’t guarantee you won’t get dinged for higher rates. Maybe it’s just the combo of all these headaches... but man, it feels like we’re paying for every possible disaster, even if we dodge most of them.

That’s the part that gets me every time. I park my car in a garage, drive like a grandma, and still my rates keep creeping up. Last year, my cousin in Dallas got rear-ended at a stoplight and her insurance barely budged. Meanwhile, I haven’t had a claim in years and mine jumps after every storm season.

I’ve heard Houston does have more uninsured drivers, but honestly, it feels like the weather is the real culprit. My neighbor’s car got waterlogged during Harvey and the insurance payout was wild—like, more than the car was worth. Maybe that’s why they lump us all together, even if we’re careful.

It’s just weird how you can do everything right and still pay for everyone else’s mess (or flood). Makes me wonder if I should just invest in a canoe instead of a new car...
