Why does insurance cost more in Houston than Austin or Dallas?

I used to think if you were a careful driver, your insurance would just be low, end of story. Then I moved from a suburb outside Dallas to Houston for school, and my rate jumped even though nothing else changed. The agent said it was all about “claims density” in my zip code. I guess Houston just has more accidents, thefts, and even weather stuff like hail or flooding, so everyone pays more, even if you’re not the one causing trouble.

I get that they have to cover their risk, but it feels weird when your neighbor with a junker pays the same as you with a newer car just because you share a parking lot. I tried the anti-theft thing too—got a tiny discount, but it barely made a dent. Sometimes I wonder if it’s even worth mentioning those features.

It’s frustrating, but I guess the math is what it is. Still, it’d be nice if they looked at more than just your address and a bunch of stats.

Yeah, the whole “claims density” thing really does sting, especially when you know you’re a careful driver. But honestly, insurance companies have to look at the big picture—if your zip code has a lot of claims, everyone’s rates go up. I get why it feels unfair, though. Anti-theft discounts are usually tiny unless it’s something serious like a tracking system. It’s wild how much more your address matters than your actual driving sometimes.

Yeah, but I’m not totally convinced it’s just about claims density. I’ve lived in both Houston and Austin, and honestly, the traffic and road conditions in Houston are way rougher. Maybe that’s part of it too? Just seems like there’s more to the story than just zip codes.

I hear you on Houston’s roads—last time I was there for work, I hit a pothole so deep I thought I’d get a bill from the city for excavation. Honestly, when I’m looking at claims, it’s not just about how many fender benders happen, it’s also what those roads do to cars. Houston seems to eat tires and suspensions for breakfast. It’s not *just* the zip code, but man, some of those streets are rougher than my grandma’s meatloaf.

Maybe, but I’ve seen way more reckless drivers there than anywhere else in Texas. That’s gotta be a bigger factor for insurance.
