Why does insurance cost more in Houston than Austin or Dallas?

Anyone else feel like they’re paying for other people’s bad driving?

Totally get what you mean. It’s wild how much my rates shot up after a couple of fender benders, even though one wasn’t my fault. Feels like we’re all getting dinged for the chaos on these roads. And yeah, repair costs here are nuts—got quoted $1,800 just to fix a bumper last year. I do think insurers use Houston’s reputation as an excuse sometimes. Not saying it’s all made up, but it sure feels like we’re stuck footing the bill for stuff outta our control.

Honestly, I get the frustration, but I’m not convinced it’s just about “bad drivers” or Houston’s rep. There’s a lot more at play—population density, traffic volume, even weather. More cars on the road means more chances for accidents, period. And yeah, repair costs are high everywhere, but Houston’s sprawling layout probably doesn’t help. I’ve lived in all three cities and my rates were always highest here, but I chalk it up to sheer numbers, not just insurance companies looking for an excuse.

I get where you’re coming from, but I think there’s more to it than just the sheer number of cars or how spread out Houston is. From what I’ve read, Houston has a higher rate of uninsured drivers compared to Austin or Dallas, and that can push up everyone’s premiums. Plus, flood risk is a big deal here—my neighbor had his car totaled in a flash flood last year, and apparently those claims add up fast. It’s not just traffic volume, it’s the whole risk profile that insurers are looking at.
