Why does insurance cost more in Houston than Austin or Dallas?

I’ve wondered about this too, especially when you said,

“their rates barely budged”
after hail in Austin. I’ve had two fender benders and a not-so-great speeding ticket record, so my rates are already high, but moving to Houston made them jump even more. It’s wild.

Honestly, I don’t buy that it’s *just* the weather or traffic. Sure, Houston gets gnarly storms and floods, but Dallas gets ice and Austin isn’t immune to hail. Feels like the insurance companies are just using Houston’s reputation as an excuse to pad their pockets. Maybe there’s some data out there, but I’ve never seen anything concrete—just those “risk maps” insurers love to show.

Also, I’ve noticed repairs cost more here for some reason. My last bumper fix was way pricier than what my cousin paid in Dallas for basically the same thing. Maybe it’s a combo of higher repair shop rates and insurance companies being extra cautious? Either way, it feels like we’re getting squeezed harder than other cities.

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing since moving to Houston—rates just shot up, even though my driving record’s clean. I don’t buy the “just weather” excuse either. Is it really that much riskier here, or is it just higher costs all around? My neighbor said body shops here charge more because of labor shortages, but it still feels like we’re getting gouged.
