Man, I feel this in my bones. Last year, I tried to get the “low mileage” discount after a summer of barely leaving the driveway—turns out, unless you’re basically living in your car, it’s pennies. At least your coffee’s on the insurance company now... sort of.

- Tried the “good driver” discount after a year of chauffeuring my kids to every soccer practice known to man. Turns out, they want zero tickets AND zero claims. Even dodging rogue shopping carts doesn’t count.
- “Low mileage” discount? Yeah, unless you’re driving less than your neighbor’s lawnmower, it’s like a $2 difference. Woohoo, that’s half a latte.
- Meanwhile, my teen’s “student discount” is basically a scavenger hunt—report cards, proof of enrollment, and maybe a blood sample.
Insurance companies really know how to keep us humble.
I hear you on the “good driver” thing. I once went a whole year without so much as a parking ticket, but then a rock cracked my windshield and—bam—no discount for me. Apparently, even stuff you can’t control counts against you. The student discount hoops are wild too. My daughter’s school sent her transcript late and the insurance company acted like we were trying to pull a fast one. At this point, I’m just hoping for a “parent who tries really hard” discount…
Honestly, I get where you’re coming from, but I’m not totally convinced all the blame’s on the insurance companies. I mean, yeah, the hoops for the student discount are a pain, but I’ve noticed sometimes it’s the schools that drop the ball. My son’s college took forever to process his grades last semester and the insurance folks just went by what they had on file. Still, it does feel like they’re always looking for a reason to raise the rates… or at least not lower them.

- Totally get what you mean about the schools dragging their feet.
- But man, insurance companies don’t exactly bend over backwards to help either.
- I tried getting the student discount and it felt like a scavenger hunt—except the prize is just “slightly less pain.”
- Maybe it’s a combo of slow schools and insurance folks who aren’t in a rush to save us money.
- Either way, it’s way more complicated than I expected.
