Do you really need extra insurance for a rental in Montana?

I get the logic behind skipping the extra insurance, especially if your credit card already covers you. But I always wonder—what happens if you’re in a spot where your card coverage has weird exclusions? Like, I read somewhere that some cards don’t cover SUVs or trucks, and in Montana, you might end up with one of those by default. Plus, what if you’re driving on unpaved roads? Some policies specifically exclude damage from that.

I’ve heard stories about people getting stuck with big bills because of “loss of use” fees or little scratches that weren’t obvious at pickup. I know taking photos helps, but sometimes it feels like there’s always a loophole. Maybe I’m just paranoid, but I’d rather pay a bit more upfront than stress about it the whole trip. Anyone else ever run into those fine print surprises?

- Totally get where you’re coming from. The fine print can be a minefield.
- I’ve rented in Montana and yeah, ended up with a pickup once—my card didn’t cover it. Had to pay for the rental company’s insurance that time.
- “Loss of use” is the one that always bugs me. Even with photos, you can’t prove how long they were actually missing out on rental income.
- Honestly, peace of mind is worth a few extra bucks if you’re worried. I’d rather enjoy the drive than stress about every little scratch.

Honestly, the “loss of use” thing always feels like a gray area to me too. I get wanting peace of mind, but man, those extra insurance charges add up fast—especially if you’re just doing a quick weekend trip. Has anyone ever actually had to pay out for “loss of use”? I’ve always wondered if that’s just a scare tactic or if it really happens often.

I get where you’re coming from—those extra fees can feel like a money grab, especially for a short trip. But “loss of use” isn’t just a scare tactic. I’ve seen people get hit with it after a fender bender, even if the damage was minor. The rental company charges you for every day the car’s in the shop, not just the repairs. If your regular auto insurance or credit card covers it, you’re probably fine skipping the extra. But if not, it can get pricey fast. It’s one of those things you don’t think about until you’re stuck with the bill.

I get the concern about “loss of use” charges—they’re definitely not just made up. Still, I’ve rented cars all over Montana and never had an issue, even with a couple of minor dings. My personal insurance covered it. I always double-check my policy and credit card benefits before saying yes to extras. If you’re careful and know what your coverage actually includes, those add-ons usually aren’t necessary. That said, if you’re risk-averse or your insurance is spotty, maybe it’s worth the peace of mind... but for most people, it just adds up fast.
