I’m starting to think “budget-friendly” is just insurance code for “good luck.”

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually had a different experience with State Farm. Their quote was a bit lower than Shelter’s for me, and the agent actually explained the coverage without making my head spin. Maybe it depends on the rep you get or your zip code? Either way, I wouldn’t write off “budget-friendly” just yet... sometimes it’s legit, just takes some digging.

I kinda get nervous about “budget” options too, but my parents had Shelter for years and never had issues with claims. When I started driving, they made me read the fine print on everything... turns out coverage details really do matter more than the price sometimes.

I get where you’re coming from about reading the fine print, but honestly, I’ve had some rough luck with claims—like, tickets and a fender bender or two. In my experience, even with “good” coverage, some companies just hike your rates or make you jump through hoops if you’re not a perfect customer. Price still matters to me because I know I’m considered high-risk, and sometimes the more expensive plans don’t actually help much when you need them. I’d say look at how each company treats folks with less-than-perfect records, not just the coverage details.

Honestly, I’ve seen both Shelter and State Farm handle claims from folks with spotty records, and it’s a mixed bag. Sometimes the “big names” are just as picky as the smaller ones. Out of curiosity, did either company actually deny you outright, or was it just rate hikes?

- Been there with both, honestly.

That’s spot on—had State Farm raise my rates after a minor claim, even though my record wasn’t that bad.
- Never got denied outright, but the premium hike stung more than I expected.
- Shelter felt a bit more forgiving when I had a classic car claim, but it might just depend on the adjuster you get.
- Don’t let it get you down—sometimes it’s just luck of the draw with these companies.
