Letting friends drive your car in MN: better to add them or rely on permissive use?

if your friend borrows it every other weekend—they might dig in and deny coverage

That’s my concern exactly. I’d rather add someone if there’s any pattern to their use. Permissive use sounds fine until you’re actually dealing with a claim... and then it gets messy fast. Not worth the risk, honestly.

Yeah, I get what you’re saying. Permissive use always sounds like a safety net, but in reality, it feels more like a loophole for insurance companies to wiggle out of paying up. My buddy used to borrow my Subaru for camping trips, and every time I’d get this nagging feeling—like, “Is this the weekend something’s gonna happen?” The last thing I want is to get stuck arguing with an adjuster about whether “every other weekend” counts as regular use.

Honestly, the peace of mind from just adding someone to the policy outweighs the small hassle. Maybe if it was a true one-off, I’d risk it, but if there’s any kind of pattern? Not worth rolling the dice. Insurance folks are basically trained to find any reason not to pay out... seems like giving them less ammo is the way to go.

- Totally get that nagging feeling—insurance fine print is a minefield.
- I’ve heard stories where “permissive use” gets denied just because someone borrowed the car a few times a month.
- Adding someone to your policy isn’t even that expensive, and it’s way less stressful than fighting with an adjuster later.
- Has anyone actually had to file a claim under permissive use in MN? Wondering if the companies there are stricter than in other states...

Never had to file a claim, but my cousin did in Duluth. Insurance covered it, but they grilled her about how often the friend drove the car. Sounded like if it was more than “once in a while,” they’d have denied it. Not worth the risk, honestly. Just add them if you can.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’ve let friends borrow my car a handful of times over the years and never had an issue. That said, I’m always a little nervous about it—insurance companies love to find reasons not to pay out. One time, my buddy got rear-ended in my old Civic and the adjuster asked a ton of questions about whether he was a “regular” driver. It worked out, but it was way more stressful than it needed to be. If someone’s gonna use your car more than just once or twice, I’d rather just add them and avoid the headache.
