How bad does a DUI mess up car insurance in Michigan?

Does it ever actually go back down, or are you just stuck with sky-high rates for years? I’ve heard some people say after a certain number of years it drops, but others say it never really recovers. Curious if anyone’s seen their rates normalize eventually...

I’ve actually been through this in Michigan, and I’ll be honest—it’s not a quick fix. After my DUI, my insurance rates shot up for what felt like forever. The first couple years were brutal, and I kept hearing conflicting things, too. Some folks said three years, others five, but nobody could give me a straight answer.

In my case, it took about five years before I saw anything close to “normal” rates again. Even then, it wasn’t quite what I was paying before the DUI, but it was at least manageable. I did shop around a lot, which helped a bit. Some companies are more forgiving after a few years, but others just keep you in the penalty box.

It’s definitely not a permanent sentence, but patience is key. I wouldn’t count on rates dropping dramatically overnight, though. It’s more of a slow crawl back to earth... frustrating, but not hopeless.

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually had a different experience. After my DUI in Michigan, my rates were sky-high for about three years, but then they dropped pretty noticeably. Maybe it depends on the company or even the agent? I switched to a smaller insurer and that seemed to help. Not saying it was painless, but five years sounds rough. Maybe I just got lucky, or maybe things have changed a bit in the last few years.

Honestly, I think you might be onto something with the company switch. I had a similar run-in—my ‘72 Chevelle became a garage queen for almost four years after my DUI. Rates were wild at first, but once I found an agent who actually cared about classic cars, things mellowed out a bit. Still, I spent more time polishing chrome than driving. Maybe it’s just Michigan insurance roulette... or maybe I should’ve stuck to collecting Hot Wheels.

Honestly, I get that. After my DUI, I shopped around for months and still ended up paying double what I used to. Did you find your rates dropped after a certain number of years, or was it just the agent switch that helped? I’m always looking for ways to cut costs, but Michigan’s system seems designed to keep us paying more no matter what.
