Getting caught without car insurance in Iowa is no joke

Honestly, I get nervous just thinking about not having the right paperwork on me. My instructor drilled it into us—if you get pulled over and can’t hand over a paper copy, it can get complicated fast, especially in places like Iowa. I keep mine in a ziplock bag with my registration, even though the glovebox is a mess. Digital’s great, but some officers still want that old-school proof. Better safe than dealing with a ticket or worse...

Not gonna lie, I used to worry about the paper copy thing too, but honestly, every cop I’ve dealt with lately just wants to see the digital proof on my phone. Maybe it depends on the county? Last time I got stopped, my insurance app glitched and the officer just waited while I restarted it. Didn’t even ask for paper. I get wanting to be prepared, but carrying all that paper feels kinda outdated now... unless you’re driving somewhere super rural, maybe.

Same here—had a cop pull me over last winter and my phone was at 2%. He just said, “As long as you can pull it up, we’re good.” Never even mentioned paper copies. I do keep a backup in the glove box though, just in case my phone totally dies. Maybe it’s overkill, but better safe than sorry if you end up somewhere with spotty service.

Honestly, I wish my luck was that good. Last time I got pulled over, my phone had just died and the officer wasn’t having it—he wanted to see proof right then. No app, no paper, just a very awkward silence. Ended up with a ticket and a lecture about “responsibility.” Maybe I just look like the type who’d forget insurance... but after that, I keep both a paper and a screenshot on my phone. Overkill? Maybe, but I’m not risking it again.

Honestly, I get it—having both a paper and a screenshot seems a bit much, but after hearing your story, maybe it’s not? I’ve always wondered if the officers are just in a bad mood or if they really can’t look it up themselves. Is it really that hard to check? I keep my insurance card in the glove box, but now I’m thinking... what if I forget to swap it out next renewal? Guess you can never be too careful, but man, it feels like overkill sometimes.
