Would you risk a higher deductible to lower your insurance bill?

I get the logic behind the higher deductible thing, but honestly, with my luck, it just feels like tempting fate. I tried it once after my rates shot up from a couple of fender benders. Sure, my monthly payment dropped a bit, but when I actually needed to file a claim, that deductible hit way harder than I expected. My “emergency fund” was more like a wishful thinking jar at that point.

I guess if you’re disciplined about saving, it can work out, but for folks who tend to have bad luck or drive in busy areas (like me), sometimes the peace of mind is worth paying a little more each month. It’s not just about the numbers for me—it's about not stressing every time I get behind the wheel. Maybe I’m just risk-averse after too many close calls...

That line hit home. I’m just starting out with insurance and honestly, the idea of a big deductible freaks me out. I’d rather pay a bit more each month than risk getting blindsided by a huge bill when something goes wrong. Peace of mind is worth it for me, even if it means less in my pocket now.

No kidding, that “wishful thinking jar” line made me laugh—been there. I drive a pretty pricey car, and honestly, the thought of a high deductible just isn’t worth the stress for me. Repairs aren’t cheap, and I’d rather not gamble with my savings if something happens. Sure, I could save a bit on premiums, but one accident and it’s all wiped out. For me, paying more upfront is just the smarter move... peace of mind over penny-pinching any day.

I get where you’re coming from. The cost of a single repair on a high-end car can be eye-watering—one minor fender bender set me back almost as much as the deductible itself once. I’ve run the numbers a few times, and while the lower premium is tempting, it just doesn’t add up for me either. Maybe if I drove something less expensive, but with luxury cars, peace of mind really does win out. Still, I can see why some folks might roll the dice if they rarely drive or have a spotless record... just not my style.

I’m with you on this one. I’ve had a couple of close calls on long road trips, and even though I drive carefully, there’s just too much out of my control—weather, other drivers, random debris. The idea of saving a bit each month isn’t worth the stress of a massive bill if something goes sideways. Maybe if I only drove around town, but for anyone who actually uses their car for adventures or commutes, the higher deductible feels like playing with fire. Peace of mind is underrated.
