I get where you’re coming from, but I kinda see it the other way. I’m still learning, but my insurance is already crazy expensive. If I can drop my monthly payment by picking a higher deductible, it feels worth it—especially since I don’t drive much outside of town yet. Maybe if I was road-tripping all the time I’d feel different, but for now, I’d rather save the money and just be extra careful. Guess it depends on how much you actually drive and what you’re comfortable with.

Yeah, I totally get that logic. When I first started driving, I bumped my deductible up just to get the monthly cost down. It made a noticeable difference. As long as you’ve got enough set aside in case something does happen, it can be a smart move. For folks who barely drive or stick to local roads, it’s less risky than it sounds. Just gotta remember not to dip into that emergency fund for pizza night...

Yeah, I did the same thing a couple years back. With three kids and a minivan, every dollar counts. The higher deductible made sense since we don’t do a ton of long trips. Only downside? When my son scraped a mailbox, that “emergency fund” took a real hit... but still cheaper overall than paying higher premiums every month. Just gotta be disciplined about keeping that backup cash untouched.

Yeah, that’s the trade-off, right? I’ve been there—my daughter’s “learning to park” phase cost me a chunk of my rainy day fund. Still, I’d rather take the hit once in a while than get nickel-and-dimed every month on premiums. It’s all about how often you think you’ll need it. Not for everyone, but with careful driving (and luck), it usually works out.

Honestly, I’m right there with you. I’ve been driving for decades and, yeah, every now and then something happens—last year a deer jumped out and my deductible stung, but if I’d been paying those higher premiums all along, I’d be way worse off by now. I like knowing the money’s in my own pocket unless I actually need it.

It’s not for everyone, though. If you’ve got a new driver in the house or you’re on the road a ton, maybe the peace of mind is worth it. But for folks who drive carefully (and a little luck never hurts), higher deductible just makes sense. I’d rather have an emergency fund that sometimes takes a hit than shell out more every single month.

And honestly, insurance companies are betting you *won’t* need to use it often. Why pay them more unless you have to? Just my two cents.
