I actually tried going with a higher deductible last year, thinking it’d save me some cash. Ended up in a minor fender bender a few months later—wasn’t pretty for my wallet. If you’ve got tickets or accidents on your record like I do, the risk feels a lot bigger. For me, the savings didn’t outweigh the stress.

I've always been a bit wary of higher deductibles for my classics, just because the parts and repairs can be unpredictable—especially if you're dealing with rare models or original components. One small mishap and suddenly you're out a few grand before insurance even kicks in. That said, I know some folks who swear by the savings, especially if their driving record is spotless and their cars mostly stay in the garage.

Curious if you've ever looked into agreed value policies versus standard ones? Sometimes those can shift the calculus a bit, especially for older or collectible vehicles. For me, the peace of mind is worth a little extra on the premium, but I get why people roll the dice. Wonder if anyone's found a sweet spot between premium cost and deductible that actually works long-term...

I get the peace of mind angle, but I’m not sure higher deductibles are worth the risk for me. Like you said,

“One small mishap and suddenly you’re out a few grand before insurance even kicks in.”
That’s exactly what worries me. I’d rather pay a bit more each month than get hit with a huge bill if something goes wrong, especially since I’m new to all this and don’t really know what to expect with classic car repairs. Maybe I’m just too cautious, but the savings don’t seem worth the stress.

I totally get where you’re coming from. When I first got my coupe, the idea of a high deductible made me nervous too—one scratch and you’re suddenly regretting it. Honestly, paying a bit more for peace of mind isn’t “too cautious” at all, especially with classic cars where even minor repairs can be unpredictable. I’ve found that knowing exactly what I’ll owe if something happens helps me actually enjoy the car more, instead of stressing every time I take it out. Sometimes, the extra monthly cost is just worth not having that nagging worry in the back of your head.

I get what you mean about peace of mind, but I can’t help thinking the insurance companies are banking on that fear. Like,

“Sometimes, the extra monthly cost is just worth not having that nagging worry in the back of your head.”
—sure, but if you drive carefully and don’t park in sketchy spots, is the risk really that high? I’ve run higher deductibles for years and only needed to pay up once. Curious if anyone’s actually done the math on how much they’ve saved (or lost) over time with a higher deductible?
