Would you risk a higher deductible to lower your insurance bill?

Honestly, I see where you’re coming from. I’ve watched folks pay way more over the years just for that lower deductible “security blanket.” If you can stick to the savings plan, it’s a smart move. Not everyone can resist dipping into that emergency fund for non-emergencies, though… temptation is real. But yeah, math-wise, your way checks out for most people who don’t mind a little risk.

Yeah, I get the logic, but as someone who’s had a couple of not-so-great years behind the wheel, I’d just say—watch out for those higher deductibles if you’re a frequent claimer. One big fender bender and you’ll feel that hit hard. If you’re accident-prone like me, sometimes the “security blanket” really is worth it… even if it costs more month to month.

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually lean the other way. I drive a ton for work and honestly, I’d rather pay less each month and just take my chances with a higher deductible. For me, it’s about the odds—yeah, if something happens, it’ll sting, but I’d rather not overpay every single month “just in case.” Maybe I’m just more comfortable rolling the dice, but those extra savings add up over time.

I get what you mean about the monthly savings, but I guess my brain just can’t stop running the numbers. If I have a $1,000 deductible and something happens, that’s a serious chunk of change to cough up all at once. Like you said,

“if something happens, it’ll sting”
—and for me, that sting is a bit too much to risk. Maybe it’s just my luck, but every time I’ve tried to “roll the dice,” I end up regretting it (once with a deer, once with a parking lot pole… don’t ask).

The peace of mind knowing I won’t get slammed by a huge bill if I mess up is worth the extra $15 or whatever a month for me. Guess it just depends on how risk-averse you are—or how many times you’ve accidentally reversed into your own mailbox.

Honestly, I totally get where you’re coming from. I’m looking at my budget and thinking, yeah, lower monthly payments sound good... until something actually happens and I’m staring down a $1,000 bill. That’d wipe out my emergency fund in one go. For me, paying a bit more each month feels safer, even if it adds up over time. Guess it’s just about what helps you sleep at night—peace of mind is worth something, right?
