It’s wild how often people assume everyone else on the road is covered, but honestly, there are more uninsured drivers out there than most realize.

Not gonna lie, I used to think only the “bad drivers” skipped insurance, but apparently it’s just... a lot of people. My uncle had his car sideswiped in a parking lot and the guy just ghosted. No note, nothing. Insurance picked up the tab thanks to that coverage. Uncle still grumbled about premiums, but he definitely stopped calling it a “scam” after that. Guess it’s one of those things you don’t appreciate until you need it.

I used to roll my eyes at uninsured motorist coverage too—until some genius decided to “customize” my side mirror in a Whole Foods parking lot and vanish into thin air. You’d think driving a flashy car would make people more careful around it, but nah, it’s like a magnet for mystery dings. My insurance guy practically had me on speed dial that year.

And yeah, the premiums sting, but after that incident? I’ll take the hit over paying out of pocket for someone else’s Houdini act. It’s wild how many folks out there are just winging it with zero coverage. I get the grumbling about insurance being a “scam,” but when you’re staring at a fresh dent and an empty parking spot, it suddenly feels like a bargain.

I get where you’re coming from, but man, those premiums still make me wince every renewal. I’ve had my share of parking lot “magic tricks” too—one time someone left a note that just said “sorry” and nothing else. Not even a fake number! I guess I’m just stubborn, but I keep thinking if I actually added up all the years I paid for uninsured motorist and never used it, I could’ve bought a new mirror (or three) out of pocket. Maybe I’m tempting fate, but sometimes it feels like the insurance companies are the real magicians here... poof, there goes my paycheck.

I hear you on the premiums—nobody likes watching their money disappear every year. But I’ve actually seen a few cases where someone got rear-ended by an uninsured driver and the repair bills were way more than just a mirror or two. It’s frustrating when you pay for something you hope never to use, but when you do need it, that coverage can be a lifesaver. Still, those “sorry” notes with no info are the worst... almost like they’re daring you to play detective.

I get what you mean about feeling like you’re just throwing money away, but I’ve actually had to use uninsured motorist coverage once. Some guy sideswiped me in the parking lot and just left—no note, nothing. At first I was annoyed at the extra cost on my policy, but when the estimate came back (like $2k for a busted door and paint), I was relieved I had it. Still, it stings paying those premiums every year, especially when you’re a student and every dollar counts. But after that incident, I’m not as bitter about it... just wish people would own up when they mess up.
