Does collision stay on a financed car after the balance drops?
A lender can require collision coverage while there’s a loan, but does that requirement usually last until the loan is paid off, or can the lender’s terms change along the way? I’m curious how people approach that point where the loan balance is lower than the car’s estimated market value.
That comparison alone doesn’t seem enough to decide. For a repairable claim, collision coverage generally pays covered repair costs, subject to the deductible and policy terms; for a total loss, the payout is generally based on the car’s value at the time of the loss, subject to the deductible. The loan still has to be dealt with, and the payout may not cover the remaining balance. What other costs or risks would you weigh before asking the lender whether collision can be removed, such as whether you could manage repairs or replacing the car out of pocket?

The requirement can change before payoff, but it depends on the loan agreement and applicable rules, not just the car’s value or the remaining balance. I’d check the agreement or get the lender’s written approval before dropping collision. The key question is whether the lender has actually waived its requirement, not whether the loan is now smaller than the car’s estimated value.
