Trading lower premiums for higher risk—worth it?

I hear you on the nerves around a big deductible—traffic’s wild and even the best drivers can’t control what other people do. I actually did switch to a higher deductible after I’d built up a decent emergency fund, but honestly, it still feels like a gamble some days. The lower premiums are nice, but every time I see someone texting at a red light, I wonder if it’s worth the stress. For me, having that cash set aside helps, but I wouldn’t say the worry ever totally goes away. It’s just about what you can live with, risk-wise.

I totally get what you mean—there’s always that little voice in the back of my mind when I see someone weaving between lanes or glued to their phone. I bumped my deductible up last year after running the numbers and realizing I could stash away the difference in premiums, but it’s definitely not a “set it and forget it” feeling.

One time I watched a fender bender happen right in front of me because someone was scrolling through their playlist. Made me question my own decision for a minute. But like you said, having that emergency fund is key. If the worst happens, at least you’re not scrambling.

It really does come down to what you can sleep with at night. Some folks are fine with the risk, others just aren’t. I think as long as you’re checking in with yourself and not just chasing savings for the sake of it, you’re doing alright.
