Honestly, I’m right there with you. We tried one of those trackers too, thinking it’d be a win-win—drive carefully, save a bit on insurance, maybe even feel a little more peace of mind. But after months of being hyper-aware of every stop sign and yellow light, our rates barely moved. It’s like they dangle the carrot but never really let you have a bite.

What really gets me is how unforgiving those things are. Like your husband’s “hard braking”—what else are you supposed to do when something darts out in front of the car? I had a similar thing happen with a kid’s soccer ball rolling into the street. Slammed on the brakes (because, obviously), and next thing I know, I’m getting flagged for “aggressive driving.” It’s not like we’re out here drag racing or slamming on the gas for fun.

I get that insurance companies want to reduce risk, but sometimes it feels like they’re just collecting data for their own benefit. The promise is lower premiums for safer driving, but in reality, it seems like they’re just finding new ways to justify rate hikes or nitpick every little thing. And with business fleets, I can only imagine how much worse it gets—multiply all those “incidents” across a dozen vehicles and suddenly you’re paying through the nose.

Maybe I’m just cynical, but it feels less about safety and more about control. Sure, some folks might see a discount here or there, but from what I’ve seen (and heard from friends), it’s mostly pennies compared to what they rake in. At this point, I’m not convinced the trade-off is worth it—especially when you’re already doing your best to drive responsibly.

Anyway, just my two cents. Maybe there’s some secret sauce we’re missing, but from where I’m sitting, these trackers seem more hassle than help.

Couldn’t agree more—those trackers are way too sensitive. I’ve had the same thing happen, flagged for “hard braking” when a deer jumped out. What’s the alternative, just hit it? And the “discounts” barely cover the hassle. Is anyone actually saving real money with these things, or is it just marketing?

I get what you mean about the trackers—sometimes it feels like they’re just looking for any excuse to ding your driving score. From what I’ve seen, the discounts can be decent for some fleets, but it really depends on driving patterns and how “by the book” your drivers are. The tech isn’t perfect, but insurers use that data to justify lower rates for “safer” fleets. But yeah, if you’re getting flagged for stuff like avoiding wildlife, it’s not exactly fair. Have you tried appealing any of those incidents? Some companies will review them if you push back a bit.

- Had the same issue with our vans—one “hard brake” for dodging a deer and suddenly my score dropped.
- The system’s definitely not perfect. Sometimes I wonder if the algorithms even account for real-world driving situations.
- Pushed back on a couple incidents last year. Took some effort, but two got reversed when we explained what happened.
- It can be frustrating, but it’s worth documenting those oddball events. Insurers aren’t always unreasonable, just slow to respond.
- Don’t let the tech get you down…most drivers are doing their best out there.

That’s exactly what gets me—like, how is swerving to avoid a deer supposed to be “unsafe”? Had something similar happen when a kid chased a ball into the street. The tech’s useful, but it sure doesn’t get context sometimes. Hang in there; you’re not alone dealing with this stuff.
