Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

Ever had a cashier try to scan both and the register just gives up?

Yeah, that’s happened to me more than once. I swear, you can practically hear the register sigh when you hand over the second coupon. I’ve noticed some places are stricter than others—Target’s usually pretty clear about what you can stack, but at my local grocery store, it’s like rolling dice every time. Sometimes they’ll let me use my rewards points and a paper coupon, but if I try to add a digital one too, forget it.

I think part of it is just how their systems are set up. It feels like they want to keep those deals separate so we don’t get too much off in one go. Honestly, I wish they’d just be upfront about it instead of making us do mental gymnastics at the checkout with kids in tow. Every now and then, though, I luck out and everything goes through—feels like hitting the jackpot on a Tuesday night grocery run.

I wouldn’t call double-dipping an urban legend exactly... but it’s definitely not as common as people make it sound.

That’s such a good way to put it. The lack of transparency is frustrating, especially when you’re trying to maximize savings and not hold up the line. I’ve noticed some stores will quietly update their policies without much notice, which just adds to the confusion. It’s not just you—sometimes it really does feel like a guessing game. When everything lines up and you get all the discounts, it’s oddly satisfying, though.

Has anyone ever actually gotten a clear answer from a cashier or manager about why you can’t stack points and coupons? I’ve asked a few times and usually just get some vague “it’s the system” response. Is it really a technical limitation, or do they just not want people double-dipping? It almost feels like they’re hoping most of us won’t notice, or just give up trying.

Also, has anyone noticed if it varies by store location? I swear I used to be able to do both at one branch of the same chain, but then suddenly it was “one or the other.” Maybe it’s a training thing, or maybe I just got lucky with a more lenient cashier... Curious if there’s any rhyme or reason, or if it’s all just random.

I’ve run into this at my local pharmacy chain. One time, the cashier actually tried both and the register just beeped and froze up—she shrugged and said, “It’s not letting me.” I’m not convinced it’s always a tech thing, though. At another location, the manager just flat-out said it was “policy,” but couldn’t explain why. Maybe it depends on who’s working that day or how strict they are about following the rules. It’s weirdly inconsistent.

Yeah, I’ve had the same thing happen at a couple of different chains. Sometimes the cashier will actually try to scan both, and it’s like the system just gives up—total freeze. I don’t buy that it’s always a tech limitation either. At higher-end stores, they usually find a workaround or at least explain why, but with pharmacies it feels like it just depends who you get. It’s inconsistent for sure... almost makes you wonder if the “policy” is just whatever’s easiest for them that day.
