I get where you’re coming from—sometimes those extra coverages feel like overkill, especially when you realize your credit card or existing policy already has your back. It’s kind of wild how much overlap there is. I’ve pared things down too, and honestly, having a solid toolkit and knowing your way around basic fixes can save a ton of hassle. That said, I still get a little anxious on longer drives, mostly because you just never know what’s around the next bend... but like you said, knock on wood.

Man, I totally get that anxious feeling on long drives—my brain always invents new ways for the car to break down in the middle of nowhere. After my first accident, I was a nervous wreck dealing with insurance. Pro tip: keep a notepad in your glove box for jotting down details if something happens. It sounds old school, but when your hands are shaking and your phone’s dead (because of course it is), pen and paper are lifesavers.

That notepad tip is underrated. I’ve seen people try to piece together details from memory days later, and it’s never as clear as you think in the moment. After my first fender bender, I was so rattled I forgot to get the other driver’s insurance info—just stood there, nodding, thinking I’d remember everything. Spoiler: I didn’t. Had to chase down details later, which made the whole claim process drag on way longer than it needed to.

One thing I’d add—if you’re able, snap a few photos of the scene and any damage, even if your hands are shaking. Doesn’t have to be pretty, just enough to jog your memory or show what happened. And yeah, paper backup is clutch when tech fails you (which seems to happen at the worst times). It’s wild how much smoother things go when you’ve got those basics covered.

Honestly, I’ve seen people forget the wildest details in the heat of the moment—license plates, street names, even what color the other car was. Can’t stress enough how much it helps to jot down everything right then and there, even if it feels like overkill. If you’re tight on cash, just keep a cheap pen and some scrap paper in your glove box. Photos are great, but if your phone’s dead or you’re frazzled, even a quick sketch of the scene can help later. It’s all about making the claim process as painless (and cheap) as possible.

I totally get the “frazzled” part—my hands were shaking so much after my first fender bender, I could barely hold a pen, let alone write down details.

“even a quick sketch of the scene can help later”
Tried that once and my “sketch” looked like a toddler’s doodle, but weirdly it did jog my memory when the insurance rep asked about where each car was. Still not convinced I’d remember to do it every time, but it’s way better than relying on adrenaline-fueled memory.
