I get what you’re saying about AAA, but honestly, I’ve had mixed luck with them. Once, I waited almost two hours for a tow, and that was in the city—not even rural. Plus, I feel like people sometimes rely on them too much and forget to double-check their own insurance perks. Some policies actually offer better roadside help, just not as advertised. Anyone else ever compare the two?

I’ve actually done a side-by-side comparison after my first fender bender, and it surprised me how much overlap there was between AAA and my insurance’s roadside coverage. Here’s what I did: first, I dug out my insurance policy and looked for the “roadside assistance” section—turns out, they covered towing up to 20 miles, lockouts, and even fuel delivery. Then I checked AAA’s perks, and honestly, the only real difference was the discounts at hotels and stuff, which I barely use.

One thing I learned the hard way: insurance roadside help usually sends whoever’s closest, while AAA sometimes sticks to their contracted companies, which can mean longer waits. That two-hour tow you mentioned? Been there. I started keeping both numbers in my glovebox just in case.

Curious—has anyone ever had their insurance roadside actually beat AAA on response time? Or is it just luck of the draw?

I’ve actually had my insurance roadside beat AAA twice now, which I didn’t expect at all. Once my BMW wouldn’t start in a parking lot, and the insurance guy showed up in like 25 minutes. AAA took almost an hour another time for a flat. Maybe it’s just luck, but I’m starting to lean on the insurance one more... even if I’m still paying for both.

Honestly, I kinda wonder if the insurance roadside folks just have less people calling them compared to AAA. Like, AAA’s got a million members and probably way more calls at any given time, right? I’ve had AAA be super fast for me before, but then last winter, I waited almost two hours in the cold for a battery jump... not fun. On the flip side, my insurance roadside came through quick when my tire blew out on the highway. Maybe it’s just a roll of the dice each time.

Still, paying for both stings a bit. Every year I debate dropping one, but then I get paranoid about being stranded somewhere with no help. Guess I’m just not ready to gamble on roadside roulette yet...

I totally get the paranoia—I'm the same way. After my first accident, I remember being so rattled that the idea of dropping either AAA or my insurance’s roadside just felt like tempting fate. But honestly, I’ve noticed the response time is all over the place no matter who you call. Once, AAA got to me in 20 minutes on a random backroad, but another time it was nearly three hours on a busy highway... go figure. Makes me wonder if it’s more about luck and location than which company you use. Still, paying double does sting—have you ever tried just using pay-per-use services instead? I keep thinking about it but haven’t made the leap yet.
