Totally agree about AAA slipping lately—had a similar headache after a flat tire last winter. As for smaller insurers handling bigger claims, here's what I'd suggest: first, check their financial strength rating (AM Best is good for this). Second, ask directly about their claims process—how quickly they respond, what documentation they need, etc. Finally, look up reviews specifically mentioning major incidents. It's tedious, but worth it...especially when family safety's involved.

Good points on checking AM Best ratings—definitely a solid start. I'd also add:

- Ask around locally if you can. Sometimes smaller insurers have great local reps who really step up during claims.
- Don't totally discount AAA yet...maybe it's regional? My brother had a pretty smooth experience with them recently (though it was just a minor fender bender).
- Curious if anyone's tried switching recently and found the grass actually greener elsewhere...or just different shades of brown, lol.

I switched from AAA about two years ago after a frustrating claim experience—felt like pulling teeth to get updates. Ended up with a smaller local insurer, and honestly, it's been night and day. Maybe it's luck, but sometimes smaller really is better...

Could be luck, yeah. I've stuck with AAA mainly for the discounts—haven't had a claim yet though. Wonder if your experience would change if you had another incident...

- Had AAA for years, no issues yet but heard mixed stories from other classic car owners.
- Smaller companies sometimes do handle specialty claims better—less bureaucracy, more personal touch.
- Might test-drive a smaller provider next renewal...worth checking out at least.
