Is it worth paying extra for full car coverage in VA?

But then, yeah, I see a deer dart across the road and start second-guessing everything... VA really does keep us on our toes.

That’s the exact thing that gets me every time—those split-second moments you just can’t predict. I’ve gone back and forth on this too, especially with an older car. What I do is weigh out the cost of dropping full coverage versus what I’d actually need to pay if something wild did happen. Sometimes just running the numbers helps me feel more confident, even if it’s not a perfect answer. You’re definitely not alone in second-guessing—these roads are unpredictable.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from—those “what if” moments are the worst, especially around here. I’ve seen folks regret dropping full coverage after a random deer encounter or a hailstorm out of nowhere. But at the same time, if your car’s older and not worth a ton, sometimes it just doesn’t make sense to keep paying for coverage you might never use.

I always tell people to think about how much they rely on their car day-to-day. If something happened and you had to pay out of pocket for repairs or a replacement, would that be a huge setback? Or could you manage it? For some, peace of mind is worth the extra cost, but for others, saving that money each month feels better.

Curious—has anyone actually had to file a claim for wildlife damage in VA? I hear about it all the time but wonder how common it really is.

- Totally agree, those “what if” moments are brutal—especially with the wildlife around here.
- I keep full coverage on my car, but honestly, sometimes I wonder if it’s just paranoia. The premiums aren’t cheap, but one deer hit and the repair bill could be insane, especially for higher-end parts.
- Had a neighbor who hit a buck last fall—front end was wrecked, and the insurance barely covered half after the deductible. Made me question if it’s even worth it sometimes.
- For older cars? Yeah, probably not worth it. But for anything you’d hate to pay out of pocket for... I’d rather be safe than sorry, even if it stings a bit each month.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from—those premiums can feel like a lot, especially if you’ve never had a major claim. But in places like VA, with all the deer and unpredictable weather, it’s not just paranoia. I’ve seen folks regret dropping full coverage after one bad night on a back road. It’s a tough call for older cars, though. Sometimes the math just doesn’t add up if the car’s not worth much. For anything newer or that you rely on daily, I’d lean toward keeping it, just for peace of mind.

- Totally agree on the peace of mind part, especially with VA’s wildlife and random storms.
- I’ve had a close call with a deer outside Charlottesville—full coverage saved me a ton.
- For my old beater, though, I dropped it and just crossed my fingers. Not sure I’d risk that on my daily driver.
- Curious—has anyone actually done the math and found full coverage worth it for a car over 10 years old? Or is it mostly for newer rides?
