Mileage-based car insurance: who’s using it and which company do you like?

I get the appeal of saving a few bucks if you barely drive, but I can’t help but feel uneasy about all this data collection. I mean, my ‘72 Chevelle isn’t exactly “telematics-friendly” anyway, but even in my daily driver, I’d be worried about a random hard brake in traffic getting flagged. Have any of you actually seen your rates go up because of some weird driving event, or is it mostly just city paranoia?

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’ve been using one of those mileage-based apps for about a year now (Metromile, if it matters), and I haven’t noticed any weird spikes in my rates. I drive in the city every day, so there’s definitely the occasional hard brake or sudden swerve—life happens, right? Maybe it depends on the company, but for me, it’s mostly just tracked miles, not every little driving hiccup. The data thing is still a little creepy, though... not gonna lie.

I’ve been kinda skeptical about these apps, honestly. My driving record’s not spotless—got a couple speeding tickets and a fender bender last year—so I always wonder if they’d ding me for that stuff, or if it’s really just about the miles. When you signed up, did they ask about your driving history, or was it all just plug in and go? I’m curious if they ever flag you for “risky” driving, or if it’s truly just the odometer that matters. The data thing is weird, yeah... sometimes I feel like my car’s tattling on me.

I get where you’re coming from—my record’s not perfect either, and I drive a car that’s not exactly cheap to fix. When I signed up for Metromile, they did ask about my driving history upfront, but the app itself just tracks mileage. No feedback on “risky” driving, at least in my experience. It really is just the odometer reading that matters for billing. The data thing is a little weird, yeah... but honestly, I’d rather have them track miles than my braking or acceleration habits. If you’re mostly worried about your past tickets, it doesn’t seem to affect the ongoing rate—just maybe the initial quote.

- That lines up with what I’ve seen—Metromile’s mostly about miles, not how you drive.
- For folks with a few dings on their record, it usually just bumps the starting quote, but after that? It’s all about how much you drive.
- Honestly, I wish more companies separated mileage from driving style... Some track everything, and it feels a bit invasive.
- Curious if anyone’s ever had their rate change mid-policy for something other than mileage? Haven’t seen it myself.
