Honestly, you nailed it—being proactive is the only way. I’ve had claims with both, and neither one just “works” without a push. One thing I’d add: if you get stuck in the phone tree or with a rep who’s not helpful, hang up and call again. Sometimes you get someone who actually cares and things move faster. Also, don’t be afraid to escalate if you’re getting nowhere. It’s annoying, but sometimes that’s what it takes. The days of “set it and forget it” are long gone with insurance...

Yeah, the “just wait and see” method is a thing of the past, for sure. I’m new to all this insurance stuff and honestly didn’t expect to spend so much time on the phone. Had a minor fender bender and thought State Farm would just handle it—nope. Took three calls and a lot of “hold music” before I got anywhere. I even joked with my roommate that the real coverage is just having the patience to keep calling back. Guess you really do have to be your own advocate with these companies...

That’s a pretty common experience, honestly. The “hold music” struggle is real—sometimes it feels like you spend more time waiting than actually talking to someone who can help. I’ve noticed that some companies have started rolling out online claim portals, which can speed things up, but they’re not always as intuitive as you’d hope. Did you end up having to submit photos or documents online, or was it all over the phone for your claim? Curious if that made any difference in how fast things moved.

Honestly, I get why people like the idea of online portals, but I’m not convinced they really save you much time—at least not every time. I’ve had a couple run-ins with State Farm’s online system, and it felt like I was just trading hold music for endless clicking and uploading the same photo three times because it wouldn’t “process.” Maybe I’m just unlucky, but I’d almost rather wait on the phone than deal with a glitchy website when I’m already stressed about a claim.

Plus, there’s the risk that you miss some crucial document or photo and don’t find out until days later when someone finally reviews your submission. That’s happened to me before, and it dragged everything out even longer. For road trips especially, I want to know a real person has all my info and I’m not going to get stranded waiting for an email that never comes. I get the appeal of tech, but sometimes low-tech is less of a headache.

Honestly, I get what you mean about the endless uploading—been there with State Farm, too. The tech’s supposed to make things smoother, but sometimes it just feels like a different flavor of hassle. I do like that with USAA, at least in my experience, their portal flagged missing docs right away instead of days later. That said, I still double-check everything because I’ve had stuff lost in the shuffle before.

Curious if anyone’s actually had a claim go faster online versus calling? Or is it just trading one set of headaches for another?
