When The Other Driver Has No Insurance And Dings Your Car

- Totally get the hesitation. I’m just now looking at insurance options and it’s wild how much extra “peace of mind” costs.
- That said, hearing stories like yours makes me wonder if I’m being too optimistic about nothing ever happening.
- Is it just me, or does it feel like you’re paying for stuff you hope you never use? But then again, that one time you need it... yeah, probably worth it.
- Still not sure where to draw the line between being careful and just overpaying for every possible scenario.

Man, insurance feels like buying a fire extinguisher for your car - hoping you never need it, but if you do, you’ll be glad it’s there. I used to think “Eh, what are the odds?” until my neighbor’s uninsured cousin backed into my bumper and just shrugged. Ended up wishing I’d paid for that uninsured motorist add-on... It’s a gamble, but sometimes the safe bet is worth the extra few bucks, even if it stings at first.

Yeah, I get what you mean. I used to think the same - why pay extra for something that might never happen? But after seeing a friend deal with a hit-and-run, the hassle and cost just weren’t worth the risk. It’s tough when you’re trying to save money, but sometimes those “optional” coverages end up saving you way more in the long run. Still stings paying that premium every month, though...

Tell me about it. My driving record looks like a bingo card, so my premiums are basically a second rent payment. But after my neighbor’s uninsured cousin sideswiped my car and vanished, I stopped gambling with “optional” coverage. Expensive, but at least I sleep better... sort of.

I get the peace of mind angle, but honestly, I’ve found that stacking all the optional coverage doesn’t always make sense - especially if your car isn’t worth much. I’ve restored a few classics, and for those, I use specialty insurance. For my daily driver? Sometimes I just take the risk. The premiums can be brutal, especially with a spotty record... but I guess it’s all about what helps you sleep at night.
