Title: Why does insurance cost more in Houston than Austin or Dallas?

I’ve wondered the same thing, honestly. It’s wild how just moving a few miles can make your rates jump like that. Is it really just about flood risk, or are they factoring in other stuff too? I mean, Houston’s big, but not every neighborhood is underwater every year. My cousin lives out in Katy and her rates are higher than mine in Dallas, even though she’s never had a claim.

Do they look at traffic accidents too? Houston drivers are... let’s just say “creative” sometimes, but is it that much worse than Austin or Dallas? I get that there’s more congestion, but it feels like the insurance companies are just lumping everyone together. Like, if one zip code floods once, suddenly everyone pays more—even if you’re on a hill.

I’ve also heard something about car theft rates being higher in Houston. Not sure if that’s true or just another urban legend. Anyone else notice that their rates went up even when nothing happened? Makes me wonder if they’re just using any excuse to hike prices.

It’s frustrating because you do everything right—no tickets, no claims, park in the garage—and still get hit with higher bills. Sometimes I think they spin a wheel and see what number comes up for your premium this year...

I get where you’re coming from, but I think it’s more than just flood zones or a few bad drivers. Insurance companies use a ton of data—like, they’ll look at accident stats, theft rates, even how expensive it is to repair cars in your area. Houston’s got a lot of dense traffic and, yeah, car theft is actually higher there compared to Austin or Dallas (I looked it up after my neighbor’s car got stolen last year). It does feel unfair when you’re careful, but they’re really crunching numbers on a bigger scale than just your own record.

Yeah, it’s rough. I get frustrated too—like, I’ve never even had a ticket and my rate still jumped when I moved here. You’re right though, it’s not just about how you drive.

That part hits. It sucks getting lumped in with all the stats, but I guess that’s just how they do it. Hang in there, you’re definitely not alone dealing with this mess.
