Why does insurance cost more in Houston than Austin or Dallas?

Man, I swear Houston’s insurance rates are in a league of their own. My cousin in Dallas has a convertible and parks it on the street, and his premium is still less than mine—and I’ve got a Camry that’s never seen a speeding ticket. I think the storms are a big part of it, but honestly, I blame the drivers too. Last week I watched someone try to merge onto 610 from a parking lot... backwards. Not even kidding.

Garage parking? Yeah, my agent acted like that was going to save me hundreds, but it barely covered the cost of one Whataburger run. I keep hoping my “no claims since 2002” badge will mean something, but apparently not if your zip code starts with a 7. At this point, I just cross my fingers every time it rains and hope nobody floats into my bumper.

Same here—my rate only dropped a few bucks after I started parking in a garage. Not worth the hype. It’s wild how much weather factors in. Do you think flood risk is the main thing, or is it more about accident stats? I’ve heard Houston has way more uninsured drivers, but not sure if that’s just a rumor or what.

Honestly, garage parking is the most overrated “discount” I’ve ever chased. My premium barely budged—like, I could maybe buy a large fries with the savings. From what my last adjuster told me (after my third fender bender... don’t judge), Houston’s got a perfect storm: floods, tons of accidents, and yeah, way more uninsured drivers than Dallas or Austin. The flood risk is huge, but those hit-and-run stats are no joke either. I swear, every time it rains here, my anxiety goes up along with my rates.

Honestly, I kinda get what you’re saying about garage parking, but for me, it actually helped a bit—maybe not enough to brag about, but hey, every dollar counts. Houston’s wild though. My neighbor’s car floated down the street last year... insurance didn’t even blink at my “safe” parking discount after that.

Yeah, I’ve seen some wild stuff in Houston too. There was this one claim—guy parked in a supposedly “high and dry” garage, but the bayou crept up and water got in anyway. He thought his insurance would be impressed by the extra effort, but flood claims are a whole different beast. It’s not just about where you park, it’s the whole risk profile of the city—hail, flooding, traffic. Houston’s just got more ways for things to go sideways compared to Austin or Dallas. Even with those little discounts, the base rate is higher because the odds are stacked against you.
