Getting that student discount on car insurance… not as easy as I thought

The whole “must be stamped and signed” thing is outdated, but some reps still ask for it like it’s 1995.

It’s wild how inconsistent they are. I had to physically drive to my university just to get a stamp—felt ridiculous. Did anyone here actually get a decent discount on a higher-end car, or is it just pennies regardless of what you drive?

Yeah, I totally get what you mean about the stamp thing—it’s like they’re stuck in a time warp. I had to jump through the same hoops last year, and it honestly felt more like a scavenger hunt than anything useful. What’s weird is, the rep I talked to didn’t even look at the actual stamp, just checked a box and moved on.

As for the discount, I was hoping for something decent since I drive a mid-range sedan, but it barely made a dent. Maybe $10-15 a month? My friend with a newer BMW said his discount was almost the same as mine, which makes no sense given how much more his insurance is overall. It’s almost like they just tack on a flat amount regardless of what you drive. Not sure if anyone’s actually gotten a “wow” deal from this... If anything, it feels more like a marketing thing than real savings.

- Had the same runaround with the paperwork—felt like I was collecting stamps for a prize that didn’t exist.
- My discount was barely noticeable too, just enough to buy a couple coffees a month.
- Honestly, I thought a newer car or better grades would mean more, but nope… flat rate for everyone, it seems.
- Maybe it’s just their way of getting us to feel like we’re winning something? Either way, not really impressed.

Yeah, I hear you on the paperwork—it’s like they want to see how persistent you’ll be before giving up. I went through the same maze and honestly, the “discount” barely made a dent in my premium. Still, I guess every little bit helps, even if it’s just coffee money. If it’s any consolation, keeping your grades up and driving safe might pay off down the line with other companies. Sometimes it’s just about sticking with it and comparing options when you can.

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually found the student discount did more for us when we bundled it with other things. If you haven’t already, try stacking it with a multi-car or safe driver discount—sometimes the combo makes a bigger difference than you’d expect. The paperwork’s still a pain, yeah, but once it’s set up, it usually rolls over each year as long as grades stay up. It’s not always just coffee money if you layer those savings right.
