I’ve wondered about this too, especially since I’m still getting used to all the “adulting” paperwork. It’s kind of wild that we’re supposed to trust our phones with everything, but then one dead battery and you’re out of luck. I keep both digital and paper in my car, just in case. Honestly, it feels like a weird game of “guess what the officer prefers today.” Maybe someday they’ll all be cool with digital, but for now, I’m not risking it.

Yeah, it’s definitely a hassle trying to keep up with what’s actually accepted. I’ve had an officer glance at my phone and wave me off, but another time, they wanted to see the paper version. It’s inconsistent for sure. Keeping both on hand is smart—honestly, with the amount we pay for insurance, you’d think they’d make this stuff easier. I wouldn’t risk just digital either, not yet.

I totally get what you mean—my instructor actually told me to always carry both, just in case. I had a friend who got pulled over and tried to show her insurance on her phone, but the officer wasn’t having it. Made her dig through her glove box for the paper copy. It’s weird how it depends on who you get. I’d rather look a little over-prepared than end up with a ticket or something. Guess until they make it official everywhere, I’ll keep both stashed in my car.

Title: Confused about insurance rules in South Dakota—help me figure this out

Yeah, that’s been my experience too—honestly, it’s kind of a gray area depending on who pulls you over. I’ve seen a few cases where someone had their digital proof ready, but the officer insisted on a paper copy. It’s frustrating because technically, South Dakota does allow electronic proof of insurance, but not every officer seems up to speed on that. It’s like the rules are there, but the practice hasn’t totally caught up.

A while back, I got rear-ended and had to show my insurance info to both the officer and the other driver. I had the app open, but the officer still asked for the printed card. Luckily, I keep a folder in my glove box with all my paperwork—registration, insurance, even an old emissions slip just in case. It felt a little overkill, but it saved me a headache.

If you want to avoid any issues, here’s what I’d recommend (just from seeing a lot of these situations play out):

1. Keep your paper insurance card in your glove box at all times. Even if you think you’ll never need it, it’s just easier than arguing with someone on the side of the road.
2. Make sure your digital proof is up to date and accessible—sometimes apps log you out or don’t load if you’re in a bad service area.
3. Double-check your expiration dates whenever you get new cards from your insurer. People get tripped up by this more than you’d think.
4. If you ever get pulled over and they won’t accept your phone, just stay calm and don’t push back too hard. Most officers are just following what they know.

I get wanting to go fully digital (less clutter, right?), but until everyone’s on the same page, having both is just safer. Not saying it’s fair, but it does save hassle. Maybe in a few years things will be different... but for now, glove box backup is the way to go.

Yep, totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve run into the same thing—especially at car shows when you’ve got a classic on the road and paperwork matters more than ever. Honestly, having a paper copy has saved me more than once, even though it feels outdated. I wish everyone would just accept the digital proof like the law says, but until then, your system makes sense. It’s not overkill—it’s just being prepared. Better to have too much than not enough when it comes to this stuff.
