I ran into something similar during my last driving lesson. My instructor insisted I keep a paper copy of my insurance in the glove box, even though I showed her the digital version on my phone. She said some officers just “don’t trust phones yet,” which honestly surprised me. I get wanting to be cautious, but it feels like the rules are ahead of what people are actually doing. I haven’t had anyone question my insurance company, but now I’m wondering if that’s just luck so far...

I get where your instructor’s coming from. I’ve always kept a paper copy in my glove box, just in case. Had a friend get pulled over last year—her phone died right as she tried to show proof. Officer wasn’t thrilled. Sometimes old school just saves hassle.

I get the logic, but honestly, I don’t see the point of carrying paper if digital is legal. I’ve got insurance cards in my phone wallet—never had a cop question it. But then again, my car’s got wireless charging, so my phone dying isn’t really an issue. Isn’t it more about making sure your tech’s reliable? Or is South Dakota just stricter about the paper thing?

I get where you’re coming from—digital’s super convenient, and I haven’t had issues with it either. But I do wonder, what happens if you’re in a spot with no cell service and your insurance app needs to refresh? Or if your phone glitches right when you need it? Has anyone actually run into a cop in SD who insisted on paper, or is that just an urban legend at this point? I’m all for tech, but I keep a paper backup in the glove box just in case... maybe I’m just paranoid.

I totally get the paranoia, honestly. I’m the same way—my glove box is a mini filing cabinet at this point. I’ve got registration, insurance cards (old and new), even a couple of napkins from some road trip years ago. Digital is great until it isn’t, you know? My phone’s battery has a mind of its own, and I’ve definitely had it die at the worst possible moments. Once, I was driving through the Badlands with the kids and lost service for hours. If something had happened, there’s no way I’d have been able to pull up my insurance app.

Funny enough, last year my neighbor got pulled over in Rapid City. He tried showing his digital proof, but his phone froze right as the officer walked up. The cop just kind of sighed and said he’d “prefer paper” but didn’t make a big deal out of it—just waited while my neighbor rebooted his phone. Didn’t sound like an urban legend to me after that.

I think SD law technically allows digital proof now, but not every officer seems thrilled about it yet. Maybe it’s just habit or they’ve seen too many tech fails on the side of the highway. Either way, having that paper backup feels like cheap insurance for your insurance... if that makes sense.

You’re not being paranoid at all—just prepared. Tech is awesome when it works, but Murphy’s Law loves a good road trip.
