Confused about insurance rules in South Dakota—help me figure this out

Been there with the “frozen phone panic”—mine locked up right as I was getting pulled over outside Rapid City last winter. Officer just kind of sighed while I tried to reboot it, then said, “Paper works faster.” He did let me show the digital card once my phone came back to life, but he made it pretty clear he’d rather see a physical copy. Guess it depends on who you get, but I keep a paper backup now just in case my tech decides to take a nap again.

That’s wild—my phone’s glitched out on me at the worst times too, but never during a traffic stop (knock on wood). I’ve always wondered if the digital insurance cards are actually “official” enough in South Dakota, or if it’s just up to the officer’s mood that day. I mean, the DMV website says they’re accepted, but it feels like some folks still want to see the old-school paper version.

I keep both in my glove box now, just in case. Honestly, I’m not sure if there’s a rule about having to carry the paper one, or if digital is fine as long as you can pull it up. Has anyone actually gotten a ticket for only having the digital card? Or is it more of a “don’t make the cop’s life harder” kind of thing? Curious what others have run into, especially in the smaller towns where things can be a bit more old-fashioned.

Honestly, I wouldn’t risk relying on just the digital card, even if the DMV says it’s fine. I’ve had a cop in a small town give me a hard time about it—he eventually accepted it, but not without some grumbling. Maybe it’s overkill, but I keep a printed copy tucked in with my registration. Phones die, apps crash, and I’d rather not gamble with a ticket or an annoyed officer, especially when driving something that already attracts attention.

Man, I totally get where you’re coming from. I once tried to show my insurance on my phone and the officer looked at me like I was pulling up a cat video instead. He finally let it slide, but honestly, I’ve had enough “close calls” with paperwork to just keep a backup in the glovebox now. It’s not paranoia if your car stands out, right? Just feels like tempting fate otherwise.

Totally get what you mean about tempting fate. I’m buying insurance for the first time and honestly, I keep hearing stories like yours—makes me want to print out three copies just in case. Never thought digital proof would be such a wild card.
