I’ve had both, and honestly, it comes down to how much peace of mind you want. My insurance roadside covered a flat tire once, but they sent a third-party company that seemed pretty overwhelmed—took almost 90 minutes. With AAA, my neighbor got a jump in like 20 minutes during a snowstorm. The difference in response time can be huge, especially at odd hours or bad weather. I do wish AAA wasn’t so expensive, though... For us, with two kids and a lot of late-night drives, the extra cost feels worth it. If you’re mostly local and not out late, insurance is probably fine, just keep an eye on what’s actually included.

I hear you on the peace of mind factor. For me, one thing that tipped the scales toward AAA was their experience with older vehicles—my '72 Cutlass needed a flatbed once, and AAA actually sent someone who knew how to handle it without messing up the suspension. Insurance roadside just wanted to tow it like any other car. Have you checked if your insurance covers specialty needs, or is it more of a one-size-fits-all deal? Sometimes those little details make a big difference, especially if you drive something less common.

I get where you're coming from, but for me, it's all about stretching the dollar. We drive a minivan and a sedan—nothing fancy or vintage—so the "specialty needs" thing doesn't really apply. Honestly,

but if your car's pretty standard, insurance roadside is way cheaper and has worked just fine for us. I’d rather save the extra cash each year than pay for AAA’s bells and whistles we’ll probably never use. Just my two cents...

I get what you mean about saving money, especially if your cars are pretty standard. I’ve always wondered, though—does your insurance roadside cover things like getting locked out or running out of gas? I heard some policies only do towing and jump starts, but AAA does a bit more. Maybe it depends on the company? I’m still figuring out which is actually worth it for someone who’s just starting to drive.

I was actually wondering the same thing when I started driving. My insurance roadside add-on is super basic—just towing and jump starts, nothing fancy. I’ve heard AAA will come out for stuff like if you lock your keys in or run out of gas, which honestly sounds pretty handy. But then again, is it overkill if you’re not driving long distances? Anyone ever had to use either for something weird, like a flat tire in a parking garage?
