Funny thing is, I still catch myself glancing at the gauge and thinking, “Eh, I’ve got a few more miles.” Old habits die hard... but now I remember that freezing night and just pull into the next station. Not worth the gamble.

I totally get this. I used to think the gas light was just a “friendly suggestion” too, until I had to explain to my kids why we were stuck in a parking lot after soccer practice. Not my finest parenting moment. I’ve read that running low can also cause condensation in the tank, which isn’t great for the fuel system either.

I’m with you on filling up at a quarter tank now. It’s just less stress, especially with family in tow. Plus, you never know when you’ll hit unexpected traffic or detours. My partner still likes to “test the limits” sometimes, but after a couple of close calls, I’m all about playing it safe.

Funny how a little orange light can teach you a big lesson...

Honestly, running it down to fumes just isn’t worth the risk. I’ve seen too many claims where folks end up stranded and roadside assistance takes hours—especially in bad weather or during rush hour. And yeah, running low can mess with your fuel pump over time, not just cause condensation. I get that some people like to push their luck, but in the end, it’s a hassle that’s totally avoidable. Just top off when you can and save yourself the headache.
