What happens if your rideshare app is between trips and you get into an accident?

Honestly, I had a different experience. When I was “between trips,” my rideshare insurance actually kicked in first, but only for liability, not my own car damage. My personal insurance didn’t even want to touch it once they saw I was logged into the app.

both tried to point fingers at each other for a bit before finally agreeing to split coverage

That’s wild—mine just flat-out said no coverage for collision if I was online. Guess it really depends on your personal policy and the rideshare company. The gray area’s a mess, but I haven’t heard of a total denial unless someone lied about being logged in.

Honestly, I’ve seen some policies that are even stricter—like, if you’re logged into the app at all, your personal insurance acts like you just turned invisible. Liability only from the rideshare side, and zero for your own car unless you’ve got a special add-on. Ever try explaining “period 1” to a claims adjuster? It’s like speaking Klingon. Anyone else ever get stuck in that weird limbo where neither side wants to pay for your bumper?

Yeah, that “period 1” gray area is a nightmare. I had a fender bender while just waiting for a ping and both my regular insurance and the rideshare company kept pointing fingers. Ended up paying out of pocket for a cracked headlight. It’s wild how fast coverage disappears the second you log in.

That’s exactly what freaks me out about driving for these apps. I had a close call once—just sitting in a parking lot with the app on, no ride yet, and some guy backed into me. My insurance agent basically shrugged and said it was “complicated.” I didn’t even bother trying to go through the rideshare company after hearing stories like yours. Now I’m super careful about when I turn the app on... not worth the headache if something happens in that weird in-between time.

It really is confusing—I've been trying to figure out what insurance I actually need before signing up for any gig apps. Stories like yours make me wonder if it's even possible to be fully covered, or if there's always going to be that weird in-between where nobody wants to help. Did your agent give any tips at all, or was it just a “good luck” kind of thing? I’m starting to think the extra rideshare insurance is worth it, but who knows if they’d actually pay out either... It’s a lot to think about.
