"any tips on what questions I should ask a local agent to gauge if they're really gonna have my back?"

Definitely smart to be cautious—insurance can get messy fast, especially if you're considered a risky driver. When I was shopping around, I found it helpful to ask agents about specific scenarios rather than just general policy questions. Like, "If I get into an accident late at night or on a weekend, what's your process for handling claims?" or "How quickly can I expect someone from your office to respond if things go sideways?"

Also, don't hesitate to ask them directly about their experience with higher-risk drivers. Some agents are great at handling tricky situations, while others might shy away from anything complicated. You can usually tell pretty quickly who's comfortable and who's just winging it.

One last thing—trust your gut feeling after talking with them. If something feels off or they're dodging questions... probably best to keep looking. Good luck out there; insurance shopping isn't exactly fun, but it's worth the effort to find someone reliable.

This right here is solid advice. I'd add one more thing—ask them upfront about hidden fees or rate hikes after an incident. I've had agents who were great at first, but once I actually needed them, suddenly there were "unexpected costs." Better to know now than find out later when you're already stressed from an accident. Good luck, insurance shopping is a pain...but it's worth doing right.

Totally agree with trusting your gut, but I'd also suggest digging into their claims process a bit. Like, how easy is it to actually get someone on the phone when things go sideways? Do they handle claims locally or outsource everything? I've seen some smaller outfits that are surprisingly responsive, while big names sometimes shuffle you around call centers forever... Just something else to think about before signing up.

Haha, preach. Had a fender-bender last year and spent more time on hold than actually driving. 😅 Smaller places can be hit or miss, but when they're good, they're *really* good—actual humans answering phones, imagine that. Definitely worth checking out their claims rep before committing... could save you a few gray hairs down the road.

You're spot on about smaller insurers sometimes offering a more personal touch. I've seen clients who switched from big-name companies to local agencies and found the claims process smoother and quicker—less bureaucracy, fewer hoops to jump through. Of course, it's not universal; some smaller outfits can be disorganized. But when you find a good one, it really does make life easier... especially after an accident when you're already stressed enough.
