Had a run-in with a rogue shopping cart last year (those things are sneaky), and ended up using a Geico shop because I just didn’t have the energy to argue. They handled all the paperwork, which was a blessing, but I did double-check their reviews first—learned that lesson after my minivan’s “mystery rattle” saga. If you’re picky about paint matching or tiny details, it’s worth being a little nosy. And yeah, ask about the warranty… mine was buried in the fine print somewhere between “wiper blade replacement” and “air freshener.”

I hear you on the paperwork—sometimes it’s just easier to let the insurance shop handle it, especially after a long day. I’ve bounced between Geico and Progressive over the years (currently with Progressive), and honestly, both have their quirks. With my last claim, Progressive let me pick my own shop, which was a big deal for me since I’m picky about paint matching too. My car’s a bit of a diva when it comes to color.

That said, I totally get what you mean about warranties being buried in the fine print.

Been there—had to dig through pages just to figure out if my trim was covered.

If you’re particular about details or have a higher-end car, sometimes it’s worth calling around to see which shops each insurer partners with. Some of the “preferred” shops are hit or miss. I’ve found that being a little pushy (in a nice way) about getting OEM parts or proper paint matching can save headaches later. Just my two cents from too many hours spent in waiting rooms...

Honestly, I’ve had both Geico and Progressive in NY, and neither one’s perfect—especially if you’ve got a couple dings on your record like me. Geico was cheaper at first, but their claims process felt like pulling teeth. Progressive let me use my own shop too, but they tried to push aftermarket parts until I pushed back. If you’re picky about repairs, you really have to stay on top of them. I’d say whichever you pick, just be ready to advocate for yourself... insurers love to cut corners if you let them.

Honestly, I’ve had better luck with Geico’s claims than Progressive, even with a not-so-clean record. Progressive kept hiking my rate every renewal, no matter what. Geico’s slow, but at least they didn’t nickel and dime me over every scratch. Not saying they’re angels, but sometimes you gotta pick the lesser evil. If you drive a lot like me, price matters more than repair shop drama.

I hear you on the rate hikes—Progressive’s renewal increases can feel like a slap in the face, especially if your driving record isn’t spotless. Geico’s claims process is definitely slower, but I’ve seen fewer surprise fees with them too. One thing to watch for: Geico sometimes limits which repair shops you can use, which can be a pain if you’re picky about where your car goes. At the end of the day, it’s all about balancing cost with how much hassle you’re willing to put up with... and in NY, neither company is perfect. Just make sure you’re not sacrificing coverage just to save a few bucks—those “cheap” policies can bite you later if something big happens.
