Honestly, this line hit home:

it’s just a different flavor of the same headache

- First time shopping for insurance and I swear, both Geico and Progressive feel like they’re reading from the same playbook.
- I keep thinking there’s some secret “good” company, but... yeah, not seeing it.
- The apps both have their quirks. Progressive’s site logged me out three times in one night. Geico’s app tried to upsell me on roadside assistance like five times in a row.
- Keeping records seems smart, but man, it’s a lot. Not paranoid, just tired.
- At this point, I’m basically picking based on which mascot annoys me less.

That “different flavor of the same headache” line is painfully accurate. I’ve been in the insurance world for a while, and honestly, I wish I could tell you there’s a magical company out there with an app that never crashes and a mascot that doesn’t haunt your dreams. But here we are, stuck between a lizard and a lady in white.

The mascot thing cracks me up because you’re not alone—my cousin literally switched from Geico to Progressive because he said he couldn’t handle the gecko’s accent anymore. Meanwhile, my neighbor refuses to go Progressive because Flo reminds her of her ex’s new girlfriend. Wild, but hey, it’s as good a reason as any.

On the tech side, you’re right—both apps have their quirks. I once had a client who got locked out of her Progressive account mid-quote and ended up on hold for 40 minutes. She said by the end she was ready to buy insurance from literally anyone who picked up the phone first. Geico’s upsell game is strong too... I swear, if they could sell you roadside assistance for your bicycle, they’d try.

Keeping records does feel like homework you didn’t sign up for. I always tell people: screenshots are your friend, especially if you’re bouncing between quotes or need to prove what you were offered. It’s not paranoia if the system is actually confusing.

At the end of the day, coverage and price are usually pretty similar unless you’ve got some weird situation (tickets, claims, unicorns on your driving record). Sometimes it really does come down to which company’s branding makes you want to throw your phone less.

If it helps at all, I’ve seen both companies pay out claims without too much drama in New York. Maybe just flip a coin and promise yourself you’ll never watch another insurance commercial again?

That “different flavor of the same headache” line is spot on. I’ve bounced between both in NY over the years, and honestly, neither one is a clear winner. Here’s how I usually break it down for myself (and maybe this’ll help someone else stuck in mascot limbo):

1. Get your quotes side by side, but don’t just look at the price. Dig into the details—deductibles, rental coverage, roadside, all that stuff. I once thought I was saving $80 a year with Geico, but then realized Progressive’s rental reimbursement was way better for just a few bucks more. That came in handy when my car got rear-ended and spent two weeks in the shop.

2. Check out their customer service ratings, but take them with a grain of salt. People mostly leave reviews when they’re mad. My experience: Geico’s phone reps were always quick, but Progressive’s online chat actually solved my issue faster when I locked myself out of my account (which, yeah, happens more than I’d like to admit).

3. If you’re into apps, test drive both before you commit. I had Geico for a while and their app was fine until it randomly logged me out and wouldn’t recognize my password. Progressive’s app isn’t perfect either, but at least it let me upload photos for a claim without crashing.

4. Discounts are where things get weird. Geico gave me a break for being a federal employee, but Progressive knocked off more for bundling with renters insurance. Sometimes it’s just about who’s running the better promo that month.

5. Keep your own records, like you said. I keep a folder in my email with every quote, policy doc, and chat transcript. It’s saved me from headaches more than once, especially when renewal time rolls around and the numbers magically change.

At the end of the day, I’ve never had either company totally drop the ball on a claim, but I have had to chase both for follow-ups. It’s not glamorous, but it’s not a nightmare either. If you’re really torn, maybe just pick the one whose commercials annoy you less... or whose app doesn’t make you want to throw your phone across the room.

That’s been my experience too—neither one’s perfect, but you’re not likely to get left in the lurch. One thing I’d add: have you looked at how each handles glass claims or minor fender benders? Sometimes the devil’s in those little details. Also, if you drive for work or have a long commute, it’s worth double-checking how each policy treats mileage and usage. Some folks get tripped up there and don’t realize it until after a claim. Just something to keep in mind before you pick your “headache flavor.”

Had a similar situation last year—Progressive was quick with my windshield claim, but Geico made me jump through a couple extra hoops. Not a dealbreaker, but it did eat up more time than I expected. Like you said, "the devil’s in those little details." If you rack up miles like I do, definitely double-check the fine print on usage.
