Full coverage is one of those terms that sounds like it should come with a superhero cape, but really it’s just a bunch of checkboxes. I learned the hard way when my ‘72 Chevelle got dinged by someone who apparently thought insurance was optional. Here’s what I’ve picked up over the years:

- “Full” coverage is like ordering the “works” on a burger and getting lettuce, tomato, but no bacon. You gotta ask for the bacon (aka uninsured motorist).
- Nebraska making UM mandatory is actually pretty cool—wish more states did that. Around here, you’re more likely to get hit by someone with expired tags than someone with actual coverage.
- Insurance paperwork? Might as well be written in ancient Greek. I swear they make it confusing on purpose so you just shrug and hope for the best.
- Always double-check your policy, especially if you’ve got a car you actually care about. My buddy thought he was covered until his Mustang got sideswiped... surprise, surprise.

Honestly, I’d rather spend an afternoon waxing chrome than reading insurance fine print, but it beats getting stuck with the bill when someone else messes up.

Honestly, I just bought my first policy and “full coverage” had me thinking I was set for anything. Turns out, nope—had to add uninsured motorist myself. Why isn’t that just standard everywhere? Insurance lingo is a maze... I nearly gave up halfway through the forms.

Title: Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

Insurance lingo is a maze... I nearly gave up halfway through the forms.

I get where you’re coming from—insurance jargon can be a headache. But I’d push back a bit on the idea that uninsured motorist should just be “standard everywhere.” The thing is, every state has its own take on what’s essential. Some places have way fewer uninsured drivers, so they don’t see the need to make it mandatory. In Nebraska, though, it’s actually required by law, which is pretty unusual compared to other states.

I remember handling a claim for someone who thought “full coverage” meant literally everything was covered. They got rear-ended by an uninsured driver and were shocked when their policy didn’t help—turns out they’d unchecked that box to save a few bucks. It’s not always clear what you’re getting unless you dig into the details, and honestly, most people don’t have the patience for that.

It’s frustrating, but I guess the logic is that giving people options keeps premiums lower for those who want bare-bones coverage. Still, I agree—there’s gotta be a better way to explain all this without making folks feel like they need a law degree just to buy insurance.

Insurance forms are the worst—seriously, I’ve had to reread sections three times just to figure out what’s actually covered. I totally get why you almost gave up. The whole “full coverage” thing is so misleading too. You’d think it means you’re protected from everything, but nope... there’s always a catch. Nebraska making uninsured motorist coverage mandatory actually makes sense when you think about how many people skip out on insurance, but man, it shouldn’t be this complicated to just protect your family on the road. You’re not alone in feeling lost with all this stuff.

I’ve been digging through these forms for my first policy and honestly, I’m still not sure I understand what “uninsured motorist” actually covers in practice. Like, does it only kick in if the other driver has zero insurance, or does it help if they’re just underinsured? I keep worrying I’ll miss something important in the fine print. Has anyone actually had to use this coverage before, and did it work out the way you expected?
